Given the flames win tonight, that last minute goal by the Wild really stings right now.

This isn't actually accurate, if you were to eliminate overtime the and just hand out 1 point each at the end of regulation. Calgary and St Louis would be tied 1 point back of Minnesota with only the Flames having a game remaining to play. Overtime didn't keep the Flames in the mix, it cost them the playoffs.

StL and Min each respectively grabbed 12 points after 60, while the Flames have gotten 10.

Either way, better season than either of us asked for. Going to be good to see Parekh play on Thursday (I assume)

What did it take to keep the Flames out?

- 12 game Blues win streak
- Nucks blow 2-0 third period lead
- Ducks blow lead in final minute
- blow late 2 goal lead vs Ducks
- blow late lead vs grease
- cheated out of at least a point vs Utah
- possibly cheated out of a point vs Dallas

All in the last month of the season. Take away even one of these, and the Flames stay in control of their destiny. At some point, all you can do is laugh.

But if you take that one step further and go to a 3-2-1 system, the Flames would have been well back.

MIN: 130 pts
STL: 128
CGY: 124 (with a game remaining)

Truly unreal how much went against the Flames.

He was probably my favourite player and the guy I would have picked to be the next captain but the last 30 games or so have been a disaster. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with Razzy Andy.

Yup.

All the negativity from the usual suspects online with the "Same outcome" and "Mushy Middle" and "Flames were fooled not to sell at the deadline" narratives are incredibly annoying tonight.

Flames went 11-4-4 after the deadline, they've went 10-2-3 in their last 15 games. The only problem is the Blues went 11-2-1 in that same time frame.

Flames did all they could to make the playoffs and really just got unlucky, in some of their own losses, as well as some of the outcomes in other games, and that has them on the outside looking in.

If this team went 8-8-3 after the deadline, and ended up giving up the 11th overall pick then I think the criticism would have been warranted.

But they played great in the last 20 games of the season, fought like hell to get in, will finish ahead of two playoff teams on points, but just got some of the worst luck I've seen down the stretch.

Good summary. It’s crazy they stayed in it that long getting zero help.

This is true, and pretty much the same logic because poor overtime performance cost them the playoffs. I think what it comes down to is Calgary was a 5 man unit x 4 line effort every game, and 3 on 3 is a lot more about speed, flash, talent, faceoffs. Things the Flames just aren't deep in right now. It's the flip side of that year or two where Johnny / Monny / Brodie could just dominate 3 on 3.

Seems like it’s over too soon. The last month has been one of the better runs this team has put together in recent memory. I really believed it was gonna happen so I guess shame on me for being so disappointed tonight.

Proud of this team but it’s tough looking back at some of the missed opportunities and OT losses that ended up being the difference. Every game matters.

At the end of the day we are in the “peak pain” position again…out of the playoffs without a high draft pick. We’ve seen this movie many times in Calgary and the focus now shifts to the front office to find a way to break the Flames out of seemingly perpetual mediocrity.

Thanks for all your work. Always looked forward to ATL posts, and always chuckled at the well thought out section headings.

Well balls that they end up just a bit short. Every time they'd lose 3-4 games I'd think reality is setting in and they'll fade out. But they got back up and clawed their way in it every time.

He has not done game day skates the last month.

We will find out what the injury was on garbage bag day

Wonder if any of the Flames will head down to help the wranglers in the playoffs?
