Just noticed: 534,452 views
Behind only Trade & E=NG threads lol.

Will be interesting to see how many views 2025 draft thread gets in comparison.

At Upside, E-Mac is updating our draft rankings spreadsheet with the results - I'm taking a couple of days off and will get up early-mid next wk.

THN has the Flames as draft day winners, along with San Jose and St. Louis.

Toronto and Vegas as losers.

Calgary Flames - I really liked Calgary's overall class. From grabbing a ton of skill in Zayne Parekh and Matvei Gridin in the first round to getting Andrew Basha in the second and one of my favorite goalie prospects, Kirill Zarubin, in the third, the Flames looked solid to me. And in nabbing high-scoring Trevor Hoskin in the fourth, Calgary may have also gotten a massive late-bloomer as well.

I thought this was a pretty nice draft reaction.
When you go at the end of the 7th round, you must start to feel pretty dejected.

Thought I should close the loop on my consensus ranking model.

Flames picks and consensus ranking

Parekh 7th (6 top 5 rankings, Bader 3rd, Elite Prospects 5th, Wheeler 5th, Dobber 4th, Ellis 4th)

Gridin 42nd (3 rankings had him a 1st rounder, FC hockey 28, Kennedy THN 21, Recruit Scouting 22)

Basha 26th (15 rankings had him a 1st rounder, Elite Prospects at 16, Consentino at 19)

Battaglia 79th (6 rankings in the 60s)

Mews 39th (3 rankings in top 40, Ferrari THN at 22nd, Dobber at 39th)

Zarubin 150th (Upside had him 78th, Kennedy 102nd)

Hoskin 183rd (1 ranking, Kennedy THN)

Misa 50th (2 first round rankings, Ferrarri THN 22nd, SMAHTS 25th)

Laing 180th (1 ranking, Horn - THW)

Jamieson 219th (1 ranking, Upside)

5 players selected had 1st round rankings.

Bump^^** Looking back a year later, it’s clear that anyone who viewed Artyom Levshunov as the undisputed No. 2 pick lacked strong talent evaluation skills. Given the caliber of players selected after him, Chicago really dropped the ball with this pick—especially with guys like Demidov, Parekh, Buium, Hutson, Catton, Iginla available. At this point, Levshunov isn’t even a top-10 prospect from this draft class. Outside of Bedard, Chicago’s drafting over the last three years has been questionable at best. They need a serious overhaul of their scouting department and leadership. Of course they could get lucky again and have McKenna’s fall into their laps next year… wouldn’t be surprised.

Seems pretty silly to make this conclusion when Levshunov has played more professional games that almost any other prospect in the draft. I’d say anyone making conclusions this early lacks the skills.

Let’s see how everyone looks after they’re all playing pro. Not comparing 19 year olds playing against 16-18 year olds and 19 year olds playing against 20-35 year olds.

Ummmmm I haven’t seen a sick highlight reel goal from him yet so I’m pretty sure we can put this to bed forever.

Way too early to make any real assessments right now other than Columbus lost the gamble with Lindstrom - at least it is looking that way. That's almost 2 full seasons now lost in development. Hopefully he is healthy enough to play, but one has to think that his development has been negatively impacted. Other than that, who knows where things end. Iginla might be the best player in the draft. Maybe it is Celebrini. Maybe it is Parekh. Heck, maybe it is Silayev. Things will become clearer in 5 years. All this is right now is trends.

It's not unreasonable to think that some people have a sharp eye for talent while others may lack this ability. It's surprising to suggest that someone can't distinguish a talented player from one who isn't. After all, this is precisely why there are good scouts and bad scouts in hockey. This disparity in talent recognition is exactly why some teams excel at identifying skilled players, while others struggle in this area.

I think it would be a interesting idea for the 2025 draft and the future drafts to put each of our talent evaluating reputations on the line assessing first rounders in this class and future classes and seeing how each of our picks turn out a few years down the road.

Check out the other draft thread—several cp posters are expressing similar opinions. Consider players like Parekh, Buium, Catten, Demidov, and Iginla. These prospects, along with possibly a few others from this draft class, are likely to emerge as better NHL players than Levshunov. While Levshunov could develop into a solid 40-50 point defenseman, picking him at 2nd overall in such a deep draft with elite talent forces you to question if that's truly satisfying. Personally, I don't think it is, and I suspect some Hawks fans may already agree.

I respectfully disagree, it’s not too early. A year after the draft, you can usually get a clear sense of the trajectory a prospect is taking. If it's truly too early to judge how a player will develop, then what's the purpose of scouts evaluating talent before the draft? Let’s just follow Mckeens or Bob Mackenzie’s draft rankings. A scouts job is to analyze and identify talent—that’s their fundamental role. And, as with any profession, some individuals excel while others fall short.
