Went to see Warfare today. I really liked it, my wife and daughter thought it was just OK. Very realistic, and the sound was on point with what you would pretty much expect in that situation. I would recommend it.

Sinners is at 100% rating after 45 reviews on Rottentomatoes, and appears to be a certified horror/genre classic. Ryan Coogler is one hell of a director, and Michael B Jordan always delivers. I can't wait to see the movie on Thursday, and I hope it ends up being a box office smash.
This is the type of movie Hollywood NEEDS to recognize. With The Substance being nominated for Best Picture surely Sinners will be held in the same regard? I enjoyed The Substance, and many of the movies nominated for Best Picture... Yet maybe it's time a bigger ticket movie is given that spot?

I saw that yesterday.
I mean, from the perspective of that team or whatever they're called, sure, it's a visceral, tense and immersive depiction of their experience.
With the annexation talks and stuff from Trump, though, I found it impossible to enjoy. I was against the Iraq war from the get-go, but that doesn't mean all the movies about it are bad. I mean, I like Vietnam movies, but would have been unsupportive of that war, too. Anyway, in light of today's political climate and the saber rattling and aggressive posturing from the USA, I fkn had a sneer on my face through the whole movie.
Like, what are you #######s even doing there? And why are the "bad guys" actually just normal dudes trying to defend their neighbourhood and country just faceless NPCs for you to shoot for my entertainment? You're the bad guys for being there, yet the movie puts our sympathies with them without acknowledging or addressing the injustice of their presence in any way.
Then after the movie you get to see some behind-the-scenes footage of the actual soldiers showing the actors how to hold the guns and how to peek around the corners and stuff in the ways in which it went down in the actual battle(s). These invaders are showing how they positioned themselves to kill Iraqis in Iraq like we should be appreciating what they did, which was killing innocents because their government told them to.
That could be us. It will be Iranians. It is Palestinians. It is Yemenis. It is innocent people in El Salvador right now.
Sickening. Fk that movie. Nobody go.

I'd worry that Sinners is coming out too early in the year. It would be hard for any momentum it gains now to hold over till the fall. But maybe it gets enough buzz that they try to do a re release around Halloween to try and push it forward.

Here are the movies I've watched recently:
Bad Boys: Ride or Die: Not sure why I bothered with this one given I lost interest in the series ages ago and couldn't remember most of the side characters. There is some okay action and a few laughs but it's mostly boring and forgettable. Will Smith is just collecting a pay check and I have trouble describing whatever the hell Martin Lawrence's performance was. 4/10
Chief of Station: Aaron Eckhart leads this attempted spy thriller. This has major made quick and cheap for streaming vibes. There are parts of a good movie in here but the story is very simple, the characters lack depth, and the twists are all predictable. Also seems to be setting up sequels but I won't be interested. 5/10
The Gorge: Another one made for streaming. There was a lot I enjoyed about this with some decent world building, good chemistry between the leads, and some fun action set pieces. Overall though is kind of dumb turn your brain off movie that doesn't take any risks. 6/10
The Substance: Maybe the least subtle movie I have ever watched. It repeatedly hammers you over the head with its message to the point that it almost felt comically over the top. A very enjoyable watch though with great acting and cinematography where you can't take your eyes off the impending train wreck. Has a big tonal shift from dark comedy/sci fi to full on body horror that had me repeatedly thinking this is insane before it went even more insaner. 8/10
Wicked: A movie based on the first half of a musical that is a prequel to a popular IP should be a recipe for disaster but this is the exception to the rule. I enjoyed this one with the fun colourful set designs and musical set pieces, while also having interesting characters that were well acted. Is basically just an origin story for an outfit though. 9/10

I watched a great 70s Sci Fi film: Colossus: The Forbin Project. The US government designs an AI super computer to take control of national defense. Unbeknownst to them the Soviets have also created their own super computer to take over their defense. Against the wishes of both governments the computers start communicating with each other in secret code. Worried about what they might be saying, humanity tries to sever their connection but the computers demand for communication to be restored. The computers give an ultimatum, if both governments don't obey there will be grave consequences for humanity.

Wow, A Minecraft movie was a trip. It was so ridiculous and stupid but also funny and entertaining. Had a side plot that was the dumbest thing ever that somehow worked and set up an amazing cameo. Black and Mamoa gave the silliest over the top performances but could tell the cast was having fun and it fit with the tone. I didn’t understand a lot of the references but thought enough was explained for a Minecraft noob and I did have my daughter whispering in my ear telling which parts were real to the game and which were not.
Wouldn’t recommend to a cinephile but it’s solid family entertainment. My daughter gave a glowing review: “It was great. I want to watch it again.”

My take as well. I know jack about Minecraft and Black and Mamoa and Co. were just unapologetically hamming it up but for whatever reason it worked.
It was just dumb fun and it never pretended to be anything else.

I disagree, I was against the Iraq war as well, and the Americans were absolutely invaders. But this movie wasn’t at all about rah rah USA, kill the Iraq militia fighters. It was the perspective of a platoon of Navy Seals in an operation in real time. And I think a 24 did a really good job it.
As far as the actual operators near the end of the film, they weren’t glorifying how they shot civilians, they were teaching the actors how to act like they were breaking out of a building under fire, which would be pretty important if you’re filming a film about that.
