They are making up a 45 point gap to even sniff a wild card? They need a whole D corp and more than the 4 young forwards who, while looking prmising, still are 40-65 point players.

Is he officially filing the papers, or just announcing that he will effectively be LTIRetired because Couture still has $13 million on the table over the next couple of years.

3rd retiree this week (Maroon, Martinez) from the 2007 NHL draft (Backlund's draft)

Looking at his career numbers, they reminded me a bit of Kadri's

Couture 933 GP 323 G 378A 701 Pts
Kadri 983 GP 304G 402 A 706 Pts

Couture with more deep playoff runs but Kadri with the ring

The only difference is that we're stuck paying Kadri $28m US over the next four years, and the Sharks get away without paying Couture another dime.

Pretty much. Ducks are +19 points this year, a colossal jump. I wonder if anybody keeps these stats y/y

The are going to have to spend $35 mil just to get the cap floor and with Couture on LTIR, they probably will have $50 mil cap space.

Top end 1st line next year. Alot depends on Askarov, but he could be the Wolf of next season.

Flames getting more points this year? They might be plus 15 and didn't really spend anything on anyone good and other than Wolf didn't get huge bumps from anyone.

Celebrinni and Smith could be PPG players next year.

The other difference of course being that Kadri is still a very effective player while Couture has only played 6 games over the past 2 seasons.

Guess we'll have to see how their rookies do. Just sayin' that they're really, really awful this year. They have a lot of holes to fill.

I think their main issue is the blueline, and I'm not sure they have immediate help coming. Dickinson is great, but still needs time. They could take Schaefer this year, but he'll need time and could even go back to junior particularly coming off an injury.
I don't see their blueline better next year, and I think that's their big issue right now.

In fact there isn't a lot of help coming next year at all from their pipeline. Musty, Cagnoni, Chernyshov are still a couple years out at minimum.

They are going to be bad for a while.

Remember when cap space was the biggest issue for San Jose. They have done a great job managing that side of things as at one point, they also had some massive anchors.

I wonder if Andersson can be a good fit to play with San Jose.

Or Celebrini and Smith could be like Bedard. And they have to build the entire rest of their team. The Sharks have a long way to go, as their 20 win season proves. This is currently the 61st worst season for any team since the 50's.

This is also their 6th year in a row without playoffs, and they're years away still

63 points and -18 this season. Worth seven million a year until he's 39?

Bedard is fine, the issue is he as incompetent management that didn't surround him with better players.

San Jose can chase guys like Marner and Ekblad in free agency. They can also make some trades.

I didn't mean to derail the Couture retirement thread with the Kadri comparison!

anyhow for sure this contract will likely be regrettable by the time its over- that was always going to be the case

for now though he is the leading scorer on a team that is somehow still playing meaningful hockey on game 81. 7M ain't what it used to be
