So if he's only on a one year deal, does that mean he's got a guaranteed spot next year? I can't imagine beating out a bunch of suitors just to stick him in the A or send him back to the NCAA.

He can't go back to the NCAA, so it's either the Flames or Wranglers.

Carter King, LW (Calgary Flames)
King has received a ton of attention from NHL scouts the past few years due to his work ethic. He plays on both special teams while doing an especially good job as a penalty killer. King is a decent enough skater that can throw some solid hits for a 5-foot-10 forward. I can see him being a third or fourth-liner in the NHL who can feed off energy. King was one of the most exciting NCAA prospects this year, so I like this for the Flames.

Due to his age, the Flames can only sign him to a one-year deal. He's likely playing on the Wranglers next year.

Contingent on Sam Morton (RFA) re-signing, also I imagine Justin Kirkland will be back.

He's unlikely to make the Flames, but you never know, stranger things have happened.

Carter King, C, Denver (Calgary Flames)
The University of Denver's captain and two-time NCAA champion Carter King is going home. The Calgary native signed with the Flames on a one-year deal that starts next season. This season, King had a career year with 21 goals and 43 points while leading Denver back to the Frozen Four. He is a tenacious forward with good pace and an ability to get on the opposition quickly and get behind defenders. He has a good work ethic on and off the ice and is a high-character player who does a lot of things the right way. His development has trended upward as he has gotten stronger and been given more opportunity. King is 23 years old and will very likely spend some time in the AHL, but he could push his way into a depth role by next season. His ceiling is likely bottom-six scoring depth, but he's turned into an especially impressive player.

Thanks everybody for your kind and random comments. Now that it's released, I'll give everybody the Cole's Notes on Carter.

* The origin of Tacoman is that I've played on a senior men's basketball team called the Fighting Tacos for the last 32 years. We were sponsored by Yucatan's Taco Stand on Crowchild years ago and the name stuck. When you have a common first and last name like Steve King, you need different things for social media and internet monikers so that's that.

*Carter did have several teams making offers but he really liked the Flames situation. He liked the staff at dev camp last year and thought the opportunity with a rebuilding team with less depth at centre than some.

* As a player, you'll get nothing flashy from Carter. A casual fan will not notice him after a small sample of views. He plays a very structured, north-south game and doesn't take many chances with the puck. His attention to detail is what's made him a coach's favourite everywhere he's been and gains his coach's trust in key situations. For much of the season in Denver, he was playing around 23 minutes a night which is insane for a centre.

*As someone has pointed out, he's strong on faceoffs, finishing second in the country in faceoff wins. He's a thick body, playing at 200 lbs this year so he wins puck battles on the dot and along the boards and spends most of his time in the Ozone in front of the net.

* Offensively, he's got some upside that maybe Rooney does not have. His college numbers are very similar to Coleman's and they're almost identical in size. Getting over 100 points and 50 goals in the NCAA in the toughest conference is substantial and he also finished with the second most short handed goals in DU history - and they've had some decent players come through that program. He's a "right place at the right time" guy because he's got very high IQ offensively and defensively that creates those chances.

* Long ways to go before he should be considered a contender to make the Flames but I do think his coach in the AHL will learn pretty quickly that he is a guy that makes teams win.

That's my absolutely and completely biased view of this latest Flames signing!!

This is a hockey dad through and through. Every step of the way talk down your own kid to be polite. I puked at Yucatan doing centurion back in the day.

No, he is awesome to get to this point. BE proud and brag a bit even its not in your nature I'm sure.

Bash says Conroy is an absolute beauty in the dealings, could not say enough about him.

Please keep us updated on this journey buds.
