Yes, that is what I mean, I should have been clearer.

Reason I am asking is because in the Wranglers thread I have read that Cooley has really cooled off, and Igntajew has checked out.

Would be nice to see Sergeev and Say both in the AHL next year.

I think that Vladar is a NHL goaltender and a solid backup and hope he returns to the Flames. I do not think that Cooley is an NHL goaltender and it will be time to move on from him.

Sergeev has shown he can be a clutch goaltender when handed the reigns. I'd start him for the Wranglers' playoff run.

Alas, it appears Sergeev did not sign an AHL PTO with the team. Usually such arrangements are announced at the same time as the ELCs.

By “loophole”, do you mean “specific provision of the CBA”?

Arsenii Sergeev, G, (Calgary Flames)
Sergeev had to be excellent down the stretch to get Penn State as far as they did. He actually saved some of his best games of his collegiate career for last. He had to do a ton of heavy lifting over his three-year college tenure, so he knows how to deal with heavy expectations. But when Sergeev is in the zone, he’s dialed in. The Flames have their long-term No. 1 in Dustin Wolf, but Sergeev has good size, athleticism and mobility and should be considered for a backup role sometime down the line.

Sergeev was lights-out in the USHL (Goaltender of the Year) but was stifled at UConn. The Penn State move really paid off for him. I think he's the Wranglers' starter next season and may even see some NHL action.

I am just curious, but what is the provision that would have allowed him to declare as a free agent in June?

I thought the Flames had until August 15, 2026.

It's the same clause Justin Schultz used to become a UFA 4 years after he was drafted. He could have used it because he played one year in the USHL after he was drafted, so the timelines between his graduating class and 4 years after he was drafted didn't line up.

ARTICLE 8.6.c.iv

If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19, who had received a Bona Fide Offer in accordance with Section 8.6(a)(ii) above, becomes a bona fide college student prior to the second June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft and does not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the later of: (a) the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college student; provided that if the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student on or after January 1 of an academic year and the Player: (1) is in his fourth year of college and has commenced his fourth year of NCAA eligibility, or (2) is in his fourth year of college and is scheduled to graduate from college at the end of his fourth year, then in the circumstances described in (1) or (2), the Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for such Player's services through and including the August 15 following the date on which he ceases to be a bona fide college student.

Followed by "woof! woof! woof!" from the crowd, which is going to be incredibly confusing for the casual observer with Wolf sitting on the bench (and anyone under 40).

Get it done!

I’m sure there would have been, he’s been a pretty clutch goalie since he went to Penn. When they signed Say, some of us wondered if it was a sign that Conny was looking elsewhere to fill the cupboards in goal.

Happy to hear that he signed. I was worried that with Wolf being anointed as the #1 with the kind of pedigree that he has, that it would cause Sergeev to just look elsewhere. Who knows what he ends up being in the end, but he is definitely tracking well. Heck, he may end up being Calgary's starter down the line somehow, as we never really know what can happen. Organizational depth in net - and everywhere else too - is great to have.

You can never have too many goalie prospects.

That clip kinda reminded me of JC Petit from those commercials back in the day…

Yes.

There was a time that Tampa Bay had Ben Bishop, and he was incredible, regularly posting sub 2.5 GAAs and Sv% over .920. But they also drafted Vasilevskiy, you know, just in case.
