Mews has 6 games left in the regular season. I hope he goes on a heater and hits 10 points and finishes with 90+

Just so we can say that since 1997, there have been 4 OHL defenseman to post 90+ point seasons, and 3 of them are currently Flames prospects.

The fact that he's close still speaks volumes.

?? - Parekh
?? - Brzustewicz
?? - Mews

Fill in the left side with some solid pieces and the Flames have a rock-solid defensive core for years.

Bahl looks like he'll be a solid part of that left side for years to come.

Morin and Grushnikov are both intriguing LH d prospects, as well.

Here is my question, what effect does this have on the retention of his rights? Can he become a free agent after a year or two in college?

Nice. Hopefully he dominates at that level and this time next year he's being signed to an ELC

There was an article about this a while back by Flames nation i think, pretty sure they came to the conclusion that any player drafyed out of the CHL and then going to the NCAA would have their rights now extend another 4 years to the drafting team.

His draft rights will convert to the same as any other college player drafted out of the USHL or Junior A.

The Flames will hold his rights until August 15 in the year he graduates, or he could leave college early and the Flames would hold his rights for 4 years from his draft.

If he leaves college early, he could become a UFA as early as June 1, 2028. If he plays all 4 seasons, he would become a UFA on August 16, 2029.

Perfect. I don't see him playing three years of college. I predict he signs in 2026 or 2027.

I recognize the degree possibility here, and asking this as a parent not a flames fan, is this what we are going to see more of in the future (Chl to ncaa), and will the player develop more in the ncaa than chl? I guess my real question is why make this decision?

Thank you for your thoughts…

My view is the ncaa is a better program including to set players up for a future they may not include pro hockey
As a parent I would want my kid to go that route for sure

NCAA is a step up from the CHL, so if you have a player who is dominating the CHL as an 18 or 19 year old after getting drafted, not a bad idea to move up to another level so to speak.

I could see a lot of the really high end kids doing two yesrs in junior and 2 in the NCAA type of thing. Should open up more spots for 18-19 year old first year players in the CHL who likely come up from Junior A.

This is likely the route Parekh would have gone if the option had been available last year. It’s a better development path for high end players than another year of CHL or trying to make the jump to the NHL as a teenager.

Agreed with above. There are so many perks of NCAA route that I think it will be viewed as the primary development league for all but the top flight picks in a decade

Let’s be all thankful we don’t have to stress at all about that!

Do we know who Michigan’s top D men will be? Who will he be competing for ice with?

Mews is at or near the top of the list. 12 of the their starters have left Michigan, either by turning pro via the transfer portal.

Free top end development for the Flames, Mews can now work on getting stronger with a lighter game schedule, Naurato is a real good coach who is very good at teaching puck skills and getting players to work on their fitness.
