His wife is a teacher here. Flames have the money to give him a blank cheque when he's a UFA, mix in with a new building, leadership role. It's not totally out of the blue there is a chance.

First sentence makes no sense vs the rest? dafuq does teacher have to do with the rest.

Good questions to ask, it's a little out of hand and maybe delusional. I thought we rolled our eyes at how Leaf fans assume every Ontario born star is going to Toronto the moment he hits UFA. Habs fans think they are entitled to every French superstar and almost none of them end up there. I don't think it's the pull or the dream fans think it is.

Because sometimes people make decisions with their spouse in mind?

Maybe because he and his wife are from here and technically his family lives here presently, despite him playing in COL.

Convenience and logic would suggest the Flames would be at the top of the list in a UFA situation.

The fact that his wife is living and working in Calgary is relevant to where he may want to sign long term to in his adult/kid having years. The teaching bit is relevant, as it applies to a pension, which creates some desire for employment continuity in one area...but I guess if you're married to an NHL star likely making 8 figures, hits on your pension aren't quite as relevant.

I'm sure Denver is a nice place, but it's not NYC and not all that different than Calgary in terms of entertainment options.

Anyways...it's all a bit of a dream now. But Makar and his family keeping ties to Calgary is a good sign.

I mentioned the teacher bit as I know her profession. There's was nothing more than that other than she has maintained her career here. Rather than just picking up and moving to Denver during hockey season, that will likely play a huge role in making the decision family wise to play here.

All of the Makar stuff above and the fact we'll have a new arena to play in with top of the line amenities might just be enough to sway him to sign with his hometown team.

I also think if the Flames look like they're building a great culture, high end prospects coming up, etc, he might want to be part of it and bring a cup back here. Its not like we'll get a discount, he's gonna get paid regardless, but it could help us at least be in the conversation

And Conroy himself is great at selling the team. He's a somewhat recent NHL player. He's very likeable. If you've got Craig Conroy calling you up on the phone and inviting you out to dinner to discuss your future with the Flames, it's pretty enticing. He puts together a much better pitch than any of the more business and/or performance orientated GMs we've had before.

I always thought that people saying it was firmly with their tongue in cheek.

But I didn’t realize his wife stayed in Calgary working during hockey season.

That’s not irrelevant.

Presumably they will want to live together full time eventually.

Wait a minute...Makar has been playing in Colorado for 6 years now making millions but his wife still lives in Calgary and works a full time job? Interesting

I used to think Konecny would end up signing in Calgary since he apparently lives there in the off season, but he signed an 8 year extension in Philly as soon as he was able.

Hopefully Makar goes to the Flames, but I'll believe it when I see it.

If his wife teaches in Calgary, and he plays in Calgary, it means he gets to see his wife more often than if they live in different countries. Would it help you understand this if his wife was a doctor, lawyer, or unicycle salesperson in Calgary?

the fact that she is a teacher probably works out for now as their work years are similar.
but him playing here would allow them to see each other more often and really, isn't that what it's all about?

I hear there's more of a demand for that in Edmonton actually, as there's a far higher capita of clowns.

I agree with the premise of this thread, and very much think that Parekh should be a added to the power play, especially after that 0-6 gong show, but lots of people undervalue Weegar's contributions since he's not super flashy.

He's put up 20 points -- 12th among all defenders -- on a middling power play, and is a fairly consistent part of it. In fact, he's had a point on 44% of Calgary's power play goals.

The Flames also know that he's not going to be the guy to carry the puck in, that's not his skillset, but they've got guys like Coronato and Frost doing that with Weegar typically doing a good job creating chances.

Weegar is no Makar or Hughes, but he's been one of the better defenders in the NHL this year, especially if we consider his 200 foot game, and he's been good on the power play.

Ya know all the times we get screwed or we come soooo close. Lots of the time it’s because we don’t have the gamebreaker, we have the lunch pail guys that come oh so close. Next season we’ll have the lunch pail guys AND hopefully a new game breaker.
