Time to negotiate a NATO but for tariffs. Imposition of tariffs against any member state will result in counter-tariffs from all members.

Trump was asked specifically if he would consider "exempting" some larger U.S. companies that have been hit especially hard by the new tariffs, and the president said he would consider it.#
"I'll take a look at it as time goes by. We're going to take a look at it," Trump responded. "There are some that have been hard — there are some that, by the nature of the company, get hit a little bit harder, and we'll take a look at that."
When asked how he would determine#which companies#might receive such an exemption, Trump responded, "Instinctively."
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/tru...y-hard-tariffs
While this Fox news story talks about exemptions (and the quotes are weird...trump just making **** up) it doesnt really connect the dots for the reader (i didnt expect them to)
What he is doing is asking companies for bribes basically. Mob boss style.
'Its a shame what these tariffs have done to your company but I can make them go away for you if you give me something'

Market fall sharply after folks are realizing nothing has actually materially changed and Trump is still in charge.
https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/09/polit...ket/index.html
Apparently the mass US treasury selloff pointed out earlier is what caused Trump to completely freak out and announce Unliberation day, once Japan started selling US treasuries along with China.
Quote:
By Wednesday, however, it had become evident the campaign to convince Trump to change course would not let up. It had also become plain after a sharp sell-off in US government bond markets — usually a safe corner for investors — that the economic ramifications of the president’s strategy were potentially catastrophic and worse than his advisers had previously predicted.
|
Actions have consequences? The morons genuinely thought that the world would grovel at Trumps feet and still buy American and were shell shocked when countries you declared a trade war against started dumping.

China have made a miscalculation. Xi said that if the US if putting tariffs on everyone, everyone should come together with China and punish the US. Let's all be friends!
So the US took tariffs off everyone except China, ensuring China has no friends.

Trump is nothing but a bully, he's bullied his way through everything he's ever done. Sometimes people stand up to bullies, and that's when their strategy falls apart, but not before more attempted bullying. Retaliation is the only rational option.

CBC mentioned this morning that Canada is now the only member of the G7 with retaliatory tariffs in place on the U.S. No doubt that when Trump sits down on the toilet this morning, his swiss cheese brain will realize this fact and he’ll likely blow a gasket and threaten 100 bajillion % tariffs on Canada. So the question is, do we continue to stay the course with our current countermeasures, or do we back off like every other country has done?

The r/worldnews subreddit is such a god damn mess right now. Tariffs here, tariffs not here, tariffs for everyone, tariffs for everyone but China, is Canada exempt, now Canada not exempt. Rinse and repeat.
I've given up trying to follow. I suppose that's the intent so as to ignore the rest of the BS going on that's catching less airtime. Absolute amateur hour in the WH. Conservative sub is loving it (once those comments going against the grain get deleted). l guess this is what winning looks like to them.

So now the US government is largely just placing tariffs on things that aren't compliant with USMCA, which is how it was before.
But, not surprisingly, the Liberal government has all its 25% retaliatory tariffs still in place. Have to fight Trump! Even though he's backed off on it.
So as an example, today there is a little water heater that was sold to a community hall. $20,000. Well, today their bill went to $30,000.
Hopefully the Liberals don't keep these additional tariffs in place much longer, otherwise it will simply be a different version of the Carbon Tax.

I've said it before, they're using tariffs as a stick. They're just a nice convenient threat.

Don't they still have the steel and aluminium tariffs in place? I thought that was what our original tranche of retaliatory tariffs were for.

Yup, that’s exactly why our tariffs are still in place, as well as the auto tariffs which are also still in effect. And our retaliatory auto tariffs are only on non-USMCA compliant parts from the U.S. Mexico is of course exempt from Canada’s tariffs.

Good. That's how it should stay, then.

Blaming the Liberals for punching the bully in the nose for stealing Canadians' lunch money is certainly a take.

So we are all on the same page, he didnt lift all the tariffs. There are 10% tariffs on everyone for 90 days except China, those didnt get reduced.

I especially liked the part where he called it the new Carbon Tax.
That was some pretty awesome mental gymnastics.

I liked the math and the bill that magically changed $10000 on the same day before 9 am.
