This is so over the top.

Coronato played a game in this exact situation three years ago.

I get reaching for the worst case scenario to somehow round out your bleak narrative but ignoring actual facts is a new level!

Edit: Also a bit of prepping for the worst, so that anything else is a welcome bit of positivity.
Except it completely ignores how they have done things under Conroy
It’s baseless complaining from someone who seems to hold the team they root for in very low regard

Wolf toiled in the A for three years, and even after we were eliminated last season, he still saw Marky get the majority of starts (instead of the team using that time to see how Wolf handled being a starter).

Coronato, Zary and Pospisil also played multiple years in the minors before given a chance here.

This is an organization that would rather have a 30 year old 4th liner with zero offensive talent playing in the top six than a 18-19 year old skilled rookie.

Chase, check, dump, chase, block, chase, check, dump, chase, block, chase, check, dump, chase, hold/trip, kill, dump, chase, check, dump, chase, block....

This is the way.
Nope!

Yeah Flames first rounders - especially high picks - have all played pretty early (ignoring the Sutter years where maybe guys like Pelletier or Zary could have bene given an earlier look).

But Monahan, Tkachuk, even Valimaki (pre-Sutter) all got into games pretty quickly.

Generally the Flames issue has been playing young guys that could be bottom 6 forwards, or maybe add more skill, that weren't high draft picks above the guys that are veteran 4th liners.

"A game three years ago." Didn't get a regular spot until the middle of last season.

Also, let's not forget about the plethora of roster spots created by the mass exodus of all our talented players wanting out. Johnny, Chucky, Hanifin, Lindholm, Tanev. Even our beloved captain was done with this team until we offered him the C.

I would have thought all those open spots would lead to a whole bunch of rookies in the lineup, but we still sent them all back down and filled those spots with Rooney and the gang of free agent 4th liners.

Yeah Zary and Pospisil eventually got called back up and stuck with the team, but that was because of injuries. It's not like we actively decided to play rookies. We signed aging 4th liners, and then called up rookies when they got hurt (we had no cap space to sign more vets).

Every single roster decision that resulted in us getting younger and/or better has been forced upon us against our will. Conroy's done an admirable job getting what he can in return, but with an owner mandate of "two home playoff games a season" there's only so much he can do.

That seems like a reach, I get Edwards is the boogeyman around here but for a team thats 20M below the cap, trading out all our UFA's - I doubt playoff revenue was something they're concerned about.

Depression sucks, for sure.

But, also... it's not like this team has been hitting grand slams for 40 years and I'm sitting here ignoring all of it. Every year has been the same thing. '04 was a happy accident along the way, but outside of that... what have we done that's been any different than what we're doing right now? Dog fight for the last spot and the chance to get swept by Winnipeg... but more likely miss by 2-4 points and draft middle of the pack again.

I'm never not going to be a Flames fan... but I think it's fair to say they've earned the "talk to me when you try something different" outlook I have right now.

So now it has to be a "regular spot". The goalposts have been moved.

In addition to Coronato, you have Honzek getting 5 games this year, his first eligible. Pelletier played with the Flames in only his 2nd pro season. Wolf really only played 2 in the minors, which is pretty standard for a star young goalie. And he wasn't quite ready when they did call him up last season - he needed the additional time.

Exactly its been bad enough we dont need to make things up...the team has also been run very differently with Conroy. Rookie starter, 20M cap space, multiple firsts.

They arent trying to "sneak in" off the ice that is just dumb. They have double the cap space of the freaking Sharks.

Instead of doubling and tripling down maybe read what EVERY other poster is saying. Also the kid is playing and soon.

I guess I just assumed that when I talked about making the team, I didn't have to specifiy that I meant for longer than one game.

So people point out all the things the team has done differently in the last couple of years, and you say it doesn't count because reasons.

It looks as if you would rather be unhappy than right.

I see where you're coming from, and injuries are a part of the NHL. So, I think it's a smart decision on the management's part to have players in the AHL that they plan to give games to, but not a whole season. "Always earned, never given" has been the moto of this organization. Were you upset by Honzek and Klapka having a great camp and starting the year with the NHL club over Coronato and Pelletier? Were Coronato's 2 AHL games this season such a detriment, or the motivation he needed to take another step? Or are you upset over losing Schwindt to VGK on waivers instead of Rooney?

I thought the Flames did a great job at developing Zary, Coronato, Wolf, and Pospisil. All of them were given bigger and bigger roles as they grew as players. I even thought the Flames did well at managing the Pelletier and Zary injury set backs. The biggest misses with player development in my recent memory were with Bennett, Valimaki, and maybe Lomberg and Kulak.

I'm excited about the prospects, and Parekh in particular as much as the next guy, but I don't mind being patient either. Playing prospects too early is a double edged sword. What if he's not physically ready yet, at 19, and he takes a hit that results in a significant injury? What if his confidence gets derailed like what happened with Baertschi?

Also which aging 4th liners do you have a problem with? Lomberg was a good add for a rebuild. Mantha a savvy top 9, deadline flip candidate, claiming Greer of waivers was solid work. Hunt getting called up after Kirkland, Duehr, Pelletier, and Klapka as the 4th line options got slimmer and slimmer?

Wait, why are you guys high-fiving over 20M in cap space? That's what happens when all your star players want out.

20M in cap space is like having a bunch of brand new tools just laying around. Who's impressed by that? Why didn't we use any of that space to buy a couple draft picks at the deadline?

How come teams like Arizona use their space to pick up expiring contracts plus draft picks, but we just sit on it? And we're celebrating that?

Yes, it's awesome that we have that much cap space to work with in the offseason, but we still could have had that space plus some extra picks. Again, that's just something other teams do. Not Calgary. No sir.

Maybe, just maybe, that has something to do with the cap estimated to rise significantly over the next few years, and teams aren't placing as much of a premium on cap space anymore?

Sure, we potentially could have picked up a 4th to mitigate a trade this season. But it's certainly not something you or I should be losing sleep over.

Conroy attempted to use that cap space to get draft picks. The market wasn't there, because the league isn't as capped out as it was last year. Conroy was approached about taking players with term, that didn't quite fit his plans.

Flames will be a playoff team in 2 years (if not this/next year) with the newest facility in the league. A top 5 goalie and Quinn/Makar level d-man and whoever else they add with their numerous picks in the meantime.

Why the hell are people so down on the team. Future is bright, stop living in the past.

Nobody is high-fiving over the cap space. They're pointing out that if a franchise has that much cap space, it is OBVIOUSLY not going balls to the wall to try to make the playoffs.

Quote:

I don't know if you've noticed, but Arizona doesn't have a team anymore. At the time they were doing that, the cap was flat and more than half the teams in the league were over the cap and using LTIR to stay technically compliant.
