Dang, I was a fan of Great Gulf's plan; that Henriquez design for that site was outstanding. Maybe the design will float on over to the new owner (but I doubt it).

Spoiler!

I've been going downtown to the office two or three days a week and have been walking around and exploring downtown again post-Covid. With all the new development and buildings it has led me to wonder what everyone's favorite older, built 30+ years ago, building is? For me it would probably be the Aquitaine Tower. I like the contrasting colours of the exterior, the design (I'm not sure if it could be classified as brutalist design) and the lobby finishings are pretty cool and pretty old school.

For me, it's easily the Barron Building. Hopefully, the latest plan to renovate it comes to fruition and is done well.

Without question, the former Nexxen / Nova tower. An architecturally stunning building built in the 80's that has such dynamic lines/shape, from any angle it reveals a new story which is not easy to do with a structure of that purpose and density. It still looks better than most new towers in Calgary today.

The Barron building is definitely cool and if it wasn't for the current state and years of neglect it would be high up on my list. It is a shame that nothing has been done for so many years but it is nice to see that it might get a life with a redevelopment.

Looks like the previously dead in the water 1st street Chinatown proposal may have new life in it again. Really hope we can get the local Councillor on board that removing a parking lot for this makes sense. I'd love to see more population in the Chinatown community, and help strengthen the retail presence there. Dragon City mall has been getting quite a few new shops/vendors and I think is ready to flourish.

Yep, the fact that that one was originally halted is frustrating. That is the perfect spot for more density. Crossing fingers this one is back on track.

That's a lot of bricks. Wouldn't that be expensive and, therefore, likely replaced with a different exterior?

Wasn't the local Councillor the one completely against losing parking in Chinatown though?

City Council approved the Minto development for the former Viscount Bennet site in a vote of 9-5 yesterday evening.

https://livewirecalgary.com/2025/04/...-city-council/

And of course this gem:

Quote:
Calgary city councillors voted nine in favour to five against for the proposal—originally 10 to four after Councillor Sean Chu mistakenly voted for the project

Voters mistakenly selected Sean Chu, but never had a chance at reversing that.

You guys have the mechanism to reverse that decision. Put the boots to the pavement and go get some signatures.

How many times has that been used successfully in Alberta? Oh, right, zero because it's a near impossible standard to reach.

The great thing is that absolutely nobody that posts here will ever live there.

Interesting article on the downtown west end and new developments like the UofC School of Architecture, Planning and Landscaping moving into the old Nexen building and the residential conversion of spots like the Petro Fina building. Lots of population and more to come, and quite a lot of untapped potential to reimagine and revitalize a lot of the streetscapes in the area.
