So I'm a little confused, does the POTUS even have the power to arbitrarily declare sweeping tariffs? I know he was using fentanyl as a flimsy excuse on Canada/Mexico given our border proximity to invoke emergency powers, but surely checks and balances are still a thing when it comes to penguins et al?

Where is this 90 day pause being reported? I see markets spiked 5%, but don't see any major news carrying the story.

It's a semi-pause, tariffs rolled down to 10%, but not gone entirely.

Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable. Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Based on a RBC call on Monday, the interpretation is effectively yes through the overriding executive order powers that can override congress.

So confusing. For instance, didn't every country impose retaliatory tariffs/duties on the US? There's no way there are 75 that didn't.

Most countries did not, only a handful (China specifically, and Canada on auto) did.

Even EU's response was retaliatory action delayed by a month as a response to the steel/aluminum tariffs, not the 20% liberation day one.

It is also very problematic that he has discovered he can move the markets 5-10% in either direction with a statement on tariffs that he can give advance notice to whoever he wants without repercussions.

Canada’s latest countermeasures were in response to Trump’s auto tariffs specifically which have not been paused. Canada and Mexico weren’t on the list for his so-called reciprocal tariffs.

As for the rest of this nonsense, it’s all just so incredibly stupid and confusing. This is the dumbest timeline ever.
