Default Sochi 2014

The IOC has awarded the 2014 Winter Olympics to Sochi Russia. This is the first time the Winter Games have been awarded to Russia.

I wonder if the NHL will pass on 2014?...perhaps the Russians dangle the long-awaited Russian player transfer agreement to ensure their participation.

I'm just a little surprised that with the global political climate where it's at, they'd chose to locate the games in a city that, from a terrorist's perspective, can only be described as convenient. I guess if the terrorists can't get to the popular targets, might as well bring the targets to the terrorists. I'd guess that both the chechnyans and al qaeda have circled the dates on their calendars and are already making plans. Pretty easy to get from either of those regions into georgia, and then from georgia through the mountains into Russia not far from Sochi.

I'll presume then to count you out of attendance for the games in Bejing then?

I don't think you can let terrorists dictate where the olympics will be, besides I'm not sure which cities are bigger targets than others. I'd say Vancouver is a much bigger target than georgia. Not too many russian troops fighting the taliban in the middle east right now.

Hey the Chinese know how to take care of their business. I wouldn't cross them, especially when it would embarrass them, you'd end up being disappeared right quick.

If it wasn't for Whistler being somewhat nearby, I would have a problem with Vancouver having the olympics aswell.

On the other subject, I'm pretty sure Sochi is way more of a target than Vancouver. The Chechnians have been responsible for hostage takings and bombings all over Russia (most notably that school where like 300 children died) and I don't think it would be very hard for them to attempt an attack, although I'm sure security will be tight.
