To me it's just logic.

Makar is generational and an unfair comparison.

Most 19 year old defensemen don't get near the league. They'll be out with three games to go and he can still get his feet wet.

And to be more specific ... if they think he can boost the third pairing, or if they want to dress 7 D and try him on the powerplay. My biggest push back was to the drop Hanley from the top four movement.

Parekh isn't most 19 year old defencemen though and Calgary is where it is because we don't have the talent to put the puck in the net like the top playoff teams. I don't think it's unfair to suggest that Parekh is in the same echelon as Makar was at a similar time in his arc either. I remember being skeptical of Makar jumping in when he did and boy was I wrong. Parekh is certainly not going to be ruined, nor is the season that is over for all intents and purposes just because he suits up right away in a calculated role.

Call it what you want, but for me, keeping a player like this out of the lineup as even just a sheltered 6/7 is not risky. Show confidence in the player who has played 2 plus seasons at historic levels. Making the pick was a great swing to begin with, and now is the time to keep being bold.

Playoff teams don't have players like Hanley in the top 4, so the point is moot.

He was and is for a team battling for a playoff spot on April 7th.

My whole point.

Which isn't moot.

Yeah, Makar played the two previous seasons against men and was 15 months older than Parekh when he got pulled into the playoffs.

He was also put into the lineup to replace Girard (the day after U-Mass was eliminated), and he probably wouldn't have gotten in that quickly without a player like that coming out.

And he had MacKinnon to play with who basically overwhelmed the Flames in that series on his own... giving the rookie a lot of space.

I'm on board with getting Parekh in the lineup, because he might provide a spark that might push them into the playoffs, but we need to temper expectations a little bit and not expect him to get first pairing minutes.

Totally fine with that.

Bean looks over his skis of late anyway.

And I like the suggest 11/7 system as well.

It's funny that the Flames would take themselves so seriously that they would never in a million years risk it, even though their chances stand at roughly 1 in 10 to get in presently.

But Makar (mind you at 20, but still not that much older) is slotted right into a playoff series for his talent and scoring ability and it pays off.

Just a reminder that this is a game and there's no rule chiseled into stone somewhere about this. They make up their own rules and this kid is and will be a massive piece for the organization.

Bean hasn't made himself irreplaceable by any metric so he's a prime candidate to come out.

What's funny is they probably won't because of reasons already listed (and that's fine), but when he does slot in I guarantee people upstairs and in the stands will be thinking to themselves "boy, we could've used that when the games mattered".

And it will be both amusing and tragic.

Do we not burn a year of his contact if he plays? Or is that only for college players, i am going back to when Johnny Gaudreau played 1 game and it burned a year off his contract.. i could be missing something...

I think for the major junior guys anything under 10 games played and their entry level contract slides so no risk there if I understand that correctly. Only slides if the player was 18 or 19 in Sept of the year they sign and Suniev is 20 so he burned a year already whether he plays or not I think

Tonight would probably have been a bit harsh.

But I think he could probably play against Anaheim on Wednesday.

Honestly even if they dressed 11 - 7 that might work.

I think they should see where he is at in practice before throwing him out against any NHL team. He may not be ready to play this level quite yet. The coach can make that call, not us sitting in front of our pc's.

I would bet he will dress, not in tonight game, however in the last couple games for sure.

Flames however are all but out of it, its not mathematic as of yet, its getting close.

Flames management, will give the lineup another couple games without any changes in my view.

I don't see 11-7 being feasible currently.

The 4th line is actually rolling this past month - whereas both Bean and Pachal have struggled. It seems like a no brainer for Zayne to step in for one of those guys, but it realistically won't happen until we are eliminated. It's not how Huska operates.

I can't see the flames dressing him yet... they are 6 points back but with 2 games in hand and a head to head game against the team they are trailing - am generally pretty pessimistic after years of flames disappointments and while its unlikely it doesn't seem like it would take a miracle for them to get in either. Wild have been playing badly and it would just take one stumble for the door to open a crack.

After how hard they've grinded this year to get here throwing in a couple kids with no NHL experience doesn't make a lot of sense.

Beat SJ and Anaheim and the Minnesota game will be like a playoff do or die.

If they drop one of the next two "easy" ones, I could see a bunch of kids coming in to the lineup. There are a few with the Wranglers that haven't been up who have earned a cup of coffee IMO as well.

We haven’t really seen how he operates with young callups added down the stretch, but that hasn’t exactly been true otherwise. Callups often watch a game and then go in, but he has also put guys in immediately.

No harm in planning to start him off playing on a third pair. If he shows better you can move him up, or if you need a goal try him with Weegar.

I think expectations may need to be brought down here. Cale Makar is like the best player in the NHL with 7 years in the league now and came in at the end of his draft plus 2 year.

			Third pair, 1st PP.

I’d even 11/7 if they’re concerned about playing him five on five.

Though at this stage of the season, it’s probably most beneficial to just let the kid play in all situations and see where he’s at.

I don’t really see that harming his development, certainly not if everyone else on the team understands anyone who touches the kid dies
