HbP first batter. Backup catcher up next..no let's not sacrifice him to get a guy to second in a one run game with a closer on to out some pressure on him, let's just let him strike out.
Swept. Back to .500.
4 hits.

Same story as last season. Cant get runs. Cant advance runners. Can't get the clutch hits. Lack of home runs.

Schneider hitting rewind on his comments from last season about the "hits will eventually come" and "good at bat, so close", today.
I'll rewind to my comments too from a year ago; I truly think any other manager in baseball doesn't make it out of last season, given the last couple years of results, or hitting, or whatever, take your pick.
Nevermind the Jays payroll and expectations of a country.
Not that he's necessarily a bad manager but at some point with the same results on the field as a team and individually and same lack of production, there needs to be a new voice and a fresh change...new hitting coach etc isn't enough.
Message or delivery gets stale and it has to have by now to those guys...and a guy new to the team like Santander is getting pulled down too so this isn't all on the players or talent physically, but it some mental block with the approach or whatever, that's affecting the hitters in the team now going on over 2 seasons.
That said, theory still holds there if Schenider goes, it's one less layer for the blame meaning the GM and President have the spotlight get brighter on them in season...which IMO is why he's been employed still after two poor seasons where no expectations were not anywhere close to met.

So sounding more and more likely Vlad does end up signing here. Sounds like it could be done within the week if these rumours are true

The longer he doesn't hit the more likely he is to want to take the Jays offer. If he has a bad season this year he isn't getting $600MM on the open market.

The duration is ugly but it brought the AAV down below $40M which is a surprise.
In the end it will be interesting to see how it breaks down year by year and if there are any opt outs for Vlad

Yes interesting to see the structure, and, though both sides will be claiming victory while being complimentary to the other side, at some point in the future, how this came together.
My guess is Vladdy gave a bit (but really really wanted the overall value to be up to $500M), while Shapiro and Atkins were told to smarten up and re-evaluate their supposed valuation from the offseason, even the one of 4 weeks ago, by someone upstairs at Rogers.
Again, you're not likely to hear that tomorrow from either side or the Sportsnet mouthpieces.

Good news. This is how you treat your homegrown stars. Gives the lineup some certainty and now the front office knows what to build around going forward.
For the fans, now you know he’s our guy for the long haul. Don’t need to get rid of all our Guerrero jerseys, posters, and t-shirts!

True, though would they have had a better chance at some FAs if they didn't basically ignore Vladdy all offseason and had that stability/certainty, fom October onwards?
No, not landing the Soto's or Sasaki's, but maybe some others who saw the Jays leave one of their top guys in limbo all winter.

Jays just gave an overweight first baseman who is terrible at fielding, base running and mental acuity $36 million per year until he's 40. Haha
I'm sure this will end well.
Hopefully he hits the piss out of the ball and fixes his launch angle so this contract doesn't hurt the Jays too bad for the first handful of years.

I hope he does well. I'm a Jays fan and now he's a Jay for life and they just decided to make him the 3rd highest paid player in the history of baseball.

I’m in the minority, but it’s likely to be a bad contract. It should have been signed a long time ago at a better price but 14 years is guaranteed to age badly. Anyway, we’ll see in 6 years the same posters screaming why did they do this? Best case is it’s front loaded so it doesn’t hold them up too badly down the road if they need to cut him.
