I don’t give a care about Canada post but the phrasing of this reply is top notch. I’m stealing it for my own future use. The positive negative surprises work well.

I see you haven’t had to drive to the airport to pick up a UPS package or back when we bought stuff from the US deal with FedEx, DHL, and UPS customs clearance fees.

Wait, you had to drive to the airport to get a package? Is that a thing? You couldn't just pay it online or something?
What were you ordering? Fentanyl?

With UPS, and this could be out of date now, if you missed the package delivery the only pick up location was the airport.
The separate complaint is the astronomical customs clearance fee they would charge on their lowest cost shipping option relative to the $5 at the time, now $10 clearance fee if flagged by Canada post. I think it was $40 at the time.

I'm in the SW and last year I had to drive up to the airport to pick up a package, I'm still pissed about that. I swear the delivery driver made 1 attempt to deliver and wrote 2nd attempt on the notice.

Oh man, I love it when the driver runs a scam like that. Was tracking the truck, home all day, no knock no doorbell just message “2nd attempt”.

I mean, they're the cheapest for most people. And they're better than UPS, which is awful.
But getting things delivered by some of the newer options is better.
Eg. We get a monthly delivery from the same vendor, and they use Uniuni. It comes exactly the same day every month, always exactly 2 days after shipment. I get an email with a zoomed in picture of the box/label in the couriers hand, and a picture of the item on my front step. Everything about the experience is better than receiving a package from Canada Post.

A few weeks ago we were getting a FedEx delivery for some medication that required special cold packaging. We have it arranged to go to a FedEx drop off location at a pharmacy (logistics are easier in case my wife or I couldn't work from home on the day of delivery, pharmacy could store it correctly, etc).
FedEx decided unilaterally to not drop off there and keep it at the airport location instead, and no one could explain who and why that decision was made.
All couriers suck

Indeed. And if you used to ship by Greyhound you really got what you paid for.
Since the ol' Dirty Dawg was the best way to ship to smaller more rural areas we shipped some weird ####.
And of course we, as upstanding Greyhound employees, were nothing but thorough, conscientious and meticulate professionals! Nothing but the best!
Have you ever seen a Nitro-cold-storage can of bull semen skewered by a forklift?
Because Lord knows I have...

I find people praise/complain about shipping companies the same was they do about vehicle manufacturers. They mostly use anecdotes or bias to make their arguments without breaking it down to the simplest explanation that they all have flaws for various reasons so it’s a pointless debate. One thing is usually consistent though, the customer is never at fault!

Is the simplest explanation that the unionized carriers eg Canada Post, UPS, Fedex all provide worse service than the non-unionized new entrants?

Has Amazon ever messed up a delivery?
Also even though I get that your comment is probably made tongue in cheek I should still point out that FedEx isn’t unionized

Of course I have. But it seems the GGG-AI LLM is clearly years out of date. A jaunt up to Aero Drive NE was the case before, but that's changed now and they can drop the parcel at a nearby pickup location, lots of them scattered around downtown. Hell, the last parcel for which I missed delivery (that was required in person due to a signature) I was able to pick up from the Staples at the corner of 9 Ave and 11 Street SW in downtown. It's also open 9AM - 8PM during the week, plus it's open on weekends. Before that, it was some UPS Store thing off 14 Street SW.
Meanwhile, the Canada Post office nearest me is literally just a block away, and is only open Mon - Fri between 10AM - 5:30PM; not on weekends at all. But that's okay because I can only use that one for sending stuff. Any parcels I miss that can't fit in the building's parcel receptacles don't even go to that nice close location; instead, I have to go to the sketchy-ass Dominion Drug Pharmasave by the old CrackMacs, which has pretty woeful parking availability, is only open until 6PM (4PM on Saturday), and closed Sundays.
So yeah, I stand behind what I said. Canada Post is the cheaper option, not necessarily better.
