I am not assuming anything. He is a good player that was there for the plucking. You build a better team by adding more good players.

Half the posters here dismissed the idea out of hand, because 'offer sheets never work', which is the stupidest argument going. Many others thought he is a lousy player because he hadn't proven anything yet - yeah, because EDM wasn't giving him the opportunity, or developing him well.

There's also the unstated assumption that Holloway would have signed an offer sheet from Calgary. The only offer sheets we ever hear about are the ones the player actually agrees to sign. I'm quite certain there are many other offers that never get signed, and therefore are never reported. If several teams try to offer-sheet the same player at the same time, he can at most only sign one of those offers. Or his agent can take the unsigned offers back to the team that holds his rights and say, ‘This is what you have to beat if you want my client to stay.’ If the team ponies up, none of the offers get signed.

(I claim no special insight. Without looking back yonks in my own posting history, I seem to recall that I thought Holloway would be worth his offer sheet but Broberg was an overpay – in dollars, not in compensation. I didn't expect either of them to perform this well; but I don't think anyone did.)

Yes, the player has to actually sign. But he did sign one, and there is good reason to think he would have signed here, as he is a Calgary kid (Bragg Creek?) and was a Flames fan. Obviously that isn't proof of anything.

Again, my point here is that it was amazing how many posters were against the idea - acquire a good young player for a 3rd round pick... nah!

The Flames' third round pick was (and is) tied up in conditions. They could not issue any offer sheets that involved a third round pick.

While true I think they could have re-acquired the 3rd

I actually think Oilers match if it's Flames on the other end of those offer sheets.

Yes, Bragg Creek. He went to school with my kid for a bit.

I wonder if you can do an offer sheet sign and trade. Let's say you own a third, but it's not yours (but better than St. Louis'). Could you do a deal for St. Louis to make the offer, and sign and then trade to you for your third rounder plus any sweetener that you care to negotiate?

You can trade a player who signs the offersheet. You cannot trade the player if the team matches for 1 full year.

Yes, I'm assuming there's no match. I'm just getting around the "no original third round pick".

I suppose if you kept Calgary's involvement a secret it might have done away with Edmonton's match - if that was the only reason - but the player and agent would have to know about the end result, so it'd be a hard secret to keep (and frowned upon by all the other gms).
