Bet the over for him breaking it Friday. The guy has owned the 'Hawks who are dressing a bunch of young D-Men. He has been 15G 30 A +11 with a hattrick recently vs. my guys.

Would be awesome if Ovi broke it against the Oilers but I'm guessing they aren't playing them anymore this season.

At 39 years old, if he scores in his next game, he'll have 40 goals in 60 games. What he's doing is absolutely crazy.

2 goals and 2 games behind Gretzky. Get the hat trick on Friday.

I mean they're both Russian stooges supporting a leader orchestrating mass killings, at this point. But at least Ovechkin was married into it as a Russian sports star, while Wayne is just a low IQ Canadian duped into misinformation through his privlaged, white life in the US.

Zero love for Trump, but Putin is worse. Ovy's relationship with Putin also goes a long way beyond just being born into it. Ovechkin played a pretty key role in Putin's election campaign in 2008:

Anyways, it's not as though either is great. Both have some very negative baggage. We're comparing the size of turd mounds.

Again, this thread is being dragged back to the stupid political discussions again!!

Can't we just enjoy a once-considered impossible record is about to be broken?

He hasn't played the Hawks this year. Last year he had 2 assists in 2 games. But two seasons ago he had a 3 goal/4 point game in December of 2022.

Your point still stands. Chicago is a weak team. It doesn't look like they're even trying to play spoiler role this year, they appear to be just going through the motions. Friday could be the night or maybe next Thursday. Since coming back from injury he has only had 1 multiple goal game and that was against Edmonton because the Oilers are no good.

IIRC, Friday is game 1486 for him.
Wayne did it in 1487.
So would be kinda wild for him to tie it in game 1486, and break it in game 1487.

Or just set the new record in one less game!

Lol! I know it doesnt work that way, but the cynic in me? If I were the Chicago starting goalie? I think I'd be having a 'scheduled bad day at the office.'

I don't understand why Ray is saying he doesn't recall seeing this other than with Gretzky. It happened with Iginla with Linden, with Ryan Smyth, with Daniel and Henrik Sedin, probably others.

I'll be honest, I won't be mad when he finally beats the record and the "chase" is over. I mean, I get it, but I still have to chuckle that the Caps will lose a game 5-1 and the biggest headline is that Ovi got the lone goal for Washington.

No. Ovechkin's connection to Putin and the war in Ukraine should be a central part of any discussion on him breaking this record, as hockey has always played a role in Russian aggression and their propaganda machine.

During the Cold War, they used their red army performances to reinforce their messages at home in Russia of superiority over the West and over democracy.

Ovechkin breaking this record at this time allows Putin to use it as part of his nationalist messaging as he galvanizes tenuous support for his invasion of Ukraine and expansionist agenda. It's one of the reason why his early discussions with Trump involves bringing back a US-Russia hockey series.

Go ahead and enjoy the record breaking, if you want to ignore the context, but people can and should continue to call out this connection.

The Kings lost the game in which Gretzky broke the record - 5-2, I think, to Vancouver.

I took a deep dive into goals per game by season over the course of the careers of Gretzky and Ovechkin. It breaks down to about 3.5 goals per game over Gretzky's career and 2.9 for Ovechkin.

That is a truly massive difference. It means that to measure their accomplishments in equivalent terms. you would have to multiply Ovechkin's totals by 12%. In other words, in Gretzky's era, Ovechkin would be at 999 goals. It's truly amazing that he's so close to breaking the record in the same number of games as Gretzky.
