Well deserved. To do this at age 39 he deserves all the accolades. Ovechkin is a machine. I hope he gets it this year.

I wasn't alive to see him really play but I wish Mike Bossy's career wasn't cut so short. I grew up watching Mario and he was phenomenal.

Bossy:
573 goals in 752 games = 0.76 goals per game.

Ovechkin:
891 goals in 1484 games = 0.60 goals per game

Gretzky:
894 goals in 1487 games = 0.60 goals per game

Lemieux
690 goals in 915 games = 0.75 goals per game

Players generally score more in the first half of their career than the second. So going by PPG over the whole career isn't a fair comparison. By 81/82 Gretzky had 91 goals to Bossy's 64. I don't see Bossy challenging Gretzky, but more likely in the Bret Hull kind of realm.

But yes, it's awful that Bossy's career got cut short. Especially as he was playing in the high scoring era. For me Lemieux and Booby Orr are the two players that I would have loved to see what they could have done with full healthy careers.

A fully healthy Lemieux likely challenges Gretzky for total points. A fully healthy Bobby Orr, especially playing into the ultra high scoring early and mid-80s, would have been something else. He could have potentially finished his career with 2500 points, as a defenceman. He would have blown Ray Bourque's 1579 out of the water.

Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy said Ovechkin's shot is both powerful and the hardest to track in the NHL, comparing it to a knuckleball that somehow moves at a high rate of speed.

Vasilevskiy said that while goalies are trained to stop flat shots at various speeds, the movement and power Ovechkin generates can't really be replicated. That's because it changes direction "at least three or four times" before reaching the net, he said.

"Even when it's flat, it's hard to stop," Vasilevskiy said. "But when it's a knuckleball, it's nearly impossible. You're just trying to get in a good position and hope to block it. There's no chance to react against such a shot."

Josi added that it's also a very difficult for a defenseman to block.

"It is heavy. But at the same time while it's heavy, he also knows where it's going," Josi said. "A lot of times, I think he knows when you're trying to block it and he finds a way to get around it."

Kind of hoping he goes into a slump and doesn't break the record this year. Not exactly sure why.

I'm kind of indifferent at this point. Its fun to watch, but regardless of whether or not its this year, hes 4 away and under contract for entire season next year.

That record is going to fall. Its just a matter of when and by how much.

He's scored 38 this season at 39 years old and coming off injury, thus far, that record is toast if he plays next season.

Felt that way too at first, but I have no love for Wayne either. So the goal scoring record is now just kind of meh to me. Whoever has it has it.
