RE Coleman, I think in the off season you get a second and a B prospect.
At the deadline, pending a sellers' market, you get a First + a Third, and or a B Prospect.
That being said I thought Mang would get you a third, and we got a second so, what do I know.

But I think he is worth more at the deadline - he would be a very low cost add, with retention, and is just the kind of player a contender wants to add. Might get something like a 1st + 3rd if the deadline is drawing decent returns.

Coleman is the type of player that is often considered the final piece for a playoff contender, so I very much agree. The obvious snag is that prices could be soft like they were last year, either because of more sellers or the perceived strength of the 2026 draft.
Chris Tanev in my mind should have returned a first rounder all day long from a playoff team for the same reason, but it didn't happen, so you never know.

Coleman has a few things over our other players he has 2 rings and was the missing piece for Tampa to get over the hump along with Goodrow.
I think his pedigree gets you more.

A #1 center is almost impossible to get via trade and being 19.
I would do the deal easily as well, and he was on that list with Bedard and guys.

The guy broke McDavid's single season point record before COVID.

If the season unfolds in an unfavorable way for the Flames next season, than I do think Coleman could be in play. I don't think the Flames eat his salary for two years, but come deadline with only a few more weeks of paying Markstrom and if all 3 slots for the 26-27 season are open than it's a possibility they move Coleman. He does have a 10 team no trade list so that should not be too prohibitive.
When you look at next years sellable pieces for me it's Anderson, Backlund, and Coleman. I only think Backlund would go at the deadline if the team is clearly not making the playoffs. Which in turn likely would make Coleman available.

I feel like Craig won't go big game hunting on July 1, much to everyone's praise. Only to piss off half the board shortly after when he extends Andersson.

And if you look at the Flames organizational depth the wing is very deep:
Sharangovich - 26 - LH
Farabee - 25 - LH
Pospisil - 25 - LH
Klapka - 24 - RH
Zary - 23 - LH
Coronato - 22 - RH
-----------------------------
Stromgren - 21 - LH
Honzek - 20 - LH
Suniev - 20 - LH
Hoskin - 20 - RH
Gridin - 19 - LH
Basha - 19 - LH
Battaglia - 19 - LH
That's 13 U-26 wingers with 7 prospects that have pretty good cases to become NHLers at some point.

I agree. On the topic of kicking the legs out from under the team next season, I think the team needs to try to make at least 3 trades.
1) Offseason Andersson trade - blows up the D core by eliminating 1 of the only 2 established top 4 D that we have (although Bahl is showing he can handle the role too)
2) Mid-season Backlund trade - blows up the C depth and removes our defensive "plays against the other team's stars" center. Send Backlund to a cup contender to try and win.
3) Mid-season Coleman trade - Once you are sending Backlund out you may as well send Coleman too.
By January, Backlund will have a 15 team no-trade list and Coleman has a 10 team NTL. Finding a suitor should be easy enough and the only sticking point would be that the Flames are already retaining on Markstrom next season and will only be able to retain on 2 of these 3 players. It would be pretty fun if both players could be shipped to the same team.
Finally, the stretch goal would be to try and trade Huberdeau. He has had a tough journey on the Flames but this season is showing that he can rebuild himself into a star player. $10.5M is still a tough contract to move but with the salary cap going up, you have to think that one of the teams looking to come out of their rebuild would be interested in a ~30 goal winger.
Teams with cap space that may be trying to take that step: Sharks, Blackhawks, Blue Jackets, UHC, and Kraken. Canadiens and Red Wings may have interest but their cap situations do not really work.

I think it is more likely that Conroy trades Kadri than Backlund. Backlund leaves only if he wants to I think, even with the trade clause opening up later in the season next year. I think he re-signed here in large measure to simply finish his career in Calgary, and to get the most games played as a Flame record. Who knows for sure what will happen, as I think given the team's direction on paper vs on ice, Conroy pretty much has us all somewhat guessing. I just think Backlund ends up retiring a Flame, but perhaps he does decide to chase a cup. Either way, I don't think Conroy will move him unless Backlund wants to be moved simply out of respect.

In a redraft he goes 3rd most likely, maybe 4th - and a lot of that is to do with how the other players regressed/didn't advance
Bedard had the 12th best 18 year old scoring season OF ALL TIME.
Zayne is in the OHL as a 18 year old.
I am excited but Flames fans need to be honest - He is still an extremly high upside but higher risk prospect. That's why he fell to 9th, and why he still wouldn't go 1st in a redraft 1 year later. Its fine to get excited, but if Chicago offered the Flames Bedard for Zayne +++ they are jumping on it every day of the week, unless one of the + is Wolf.
The chances Zayne turns into Makar are much much less then Bedard turning into a 2nd liner

You can make stats say whatever you want. Guys that had more points as 18 YOs than Bedard include Clayton Keller and Jeff Skinner. Hawerchuk, Crosby and Lemieux had 100 pt seasons as 18 YOs. Bedard had 61. You are trying to make is sound like he had a historic season, but he is not in elite territory with 61 pts, he is in 'really good' territory.
Also, progression matters. Parekh went God-mode in the 2nd half of the season and literally put up historic numbers for a defenseman in the OHL. Bedard regressed - or, more accurate probably: he was basically flat to the prior year.
Bedard is a great player, but he is no where near what generational players were doing in their D+1 and D+2 years.
(also, I am not arguing that Parekh is better - my argument is that Bedard is over-rated)

Most likely to be traded by the deadline next year IMO (if they're out of it):
Andersson (summer IMO)
Coleman
Lomberg
Hanley
Pachal
Bean
Vladar
I think Backlund only gets traded if he asks for it.

I would be.
He's been really good for them, but I think this is a case where they both shakes hands and walk away.
There are too many younger D we need make spots for.

I feel like Hanley has resurrected his career or at least put himself back on the map so to speak. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a small raise elsewhere. But yeah, probably not here.

Bedard isn't a generational player like Crosby, but he's a franchise player that you would build a team around. He's not overvalued; he's simply playing on one of the worst NHL teams in the last 20 years.
No defence. No forwards. No goaltending.
Opposing teams stick their top shutdown guys on Bedard and his two 3rd liner linemates (right now it's Donato and Nazar) and how much can he do?
McDavid came into the league behind Draisatl and Nugent-Hopkins. Eichel came in behind O'Reilly and Reinhardt. Mackinnon had Duchenne and O'Reilly sheltering him.
Bedard has no one. Chicago wouldn't be dumb enough to trade him, but if they wanted Parekh plus both Calgary firsts this year, get it done.

If Andersson is traded and Hanley is not brought back then that would mean that the team has again slashed half of their top 4 out of the D group.
Bahl-Weegar
Bean-Pachal
Solovyov-Parekh
X: Miromanov
That group would be in trouble. Especially the second pair.
You guys are probably right about Backlund. I didn't realize how close the numbers were. He is currently 162 behind Iginla. By the end of the season he should be down to 153 and he would need nearly 2 full seasons to get there, which doesn't leave room for him to join another team for 20 games next season (unless he thinks he has 3 seasons left in the tank).
