It wouldn't matter anyways. NHL is a low viewer sport in the American sports and show/movie landscape. They're putting everything into this because there's like 1 or 2 games a week where they can spend all week preparing info and spots and they're showcasing to test out what returns they get on sports.

Despite what you're seeing from them now if they eventually take over they'll just cut all costs and offer the same sportsnet quality broadcasts. If you're looking for a savior that gives the customer a great product without cutting costs I wouldn't be looking towards Amazon.

Does anyone know if Amazon has their own production team or do they just put their own graphics on a feed that is otherwise done by the same people as the Sportsnet games?

I would imagine it's Amazon as I haven't seen any Sportsnet or ESPN feed with the same angles and shots as Amazon. especially pre game, intermissions and powerplays.

You can tell by the picture quality of the feed Sportsnet has nothing to do with it.

Also, Adnan Virk is a 100X better than Ron Maclean.

There are 55 Flames games shown on SN in BC this season.

What a depressing bit of news to wake up to especially a night after watching the Flames via far superior broadcast. This guarantees more years of MacLean.

To me this is all a non story. Bell has liquidity issues and can’t afford to bid. I would bet Amazon was lowballing. Plus it’s hard to grow the sport with an online distributor. Rogers was the logical choice by default. Their product doesn’t suck. It’s just a continuation. Meh.

In case anyone questions the value of the Canadian market and the revenue we bring to the league:

Broadcast rights for a CDN franchise are worth $91M/year
Broadcast rights for a US franchise are worth $24M/year

Canadian broadcast rights are worth $16 per capita. American is worth $1.76 per capita.

It is unfortunate the deal is in USD to protect the NHL from CAD fluctuations.

These numbers align with concentration numbers that generally suggest about 60% concentration of fans in Cdn cities, and 6-10% concentration in US cities.

And some people try to argue that the GTA can't handle a 2nd team - they could handle 3, FFS.

What's unfortunate is that at some point (in the 80s?) Canadian teams gave up the exclusive rights to Canadian broadcast TV revenue in the hopes that the U.S. revenue would become a cash cow.

I wonder if this was built into the projections for the cap increases. They wouldd have been deep into negotiations to announce those numbers.

Not entirely surprising, but I'm sure there will be more and more folks deciding to sail the seven seas in coming years.

I wish they had spent 10 mil and spent the other 1 mil on higher quality video.

It's so wild to me that the Amazon streams look so much better using what I assume are the same cameras in the arena.

It is a matter of compression quality. The less you compress, the more it costs.

They have there own production feed and with may more resources for a regular season game then Sportsnet even does in the playoffs

I am hoping that Sportsnet will be forced to up their game but doubt it.

As a busy parent I'm no longer able to watch games live and commonly use my phone. At least prime I can pause the game and it will remember where I am and I can easily start and stop. Sportsnet is the worst I can't believe that if I pause or leave the app it will crash and I have to try and find where I was in the game. These are simple things that should and need to be provided but it's like Sportsnet expects everyone to be watching live
