Default Site in Calgary

I may very well be crazy but maybe someone else on here knows what I am talking about. I remember a long time ago driving by a place in Calgary were there were some remains of buildings that have been turned into a historical site (I think). I believe a few corners of walls are left and some arch ways. The stones are white and I swear I've seen wedding pictures being taken there. Is there such a place in Calgary and where would it be? Or am I just nuts and apparently remembering it from somewhere else...

Sounds like the old hospital site down by the Stampede.

I think they're sandstones, and it's on 12AVE just east of the Stampede grounds. It's an old hospital? I walked through it the other day to figure out what it was but the only plaque there said that the park (wasn't even named) was opened by Peter Lougheed.

I think it was, but I could be wrong.

Awwww... you're concerned for me! Actually, I was walking up Scotsman's Hill to see the fireworks. Then walking home. No I wasn't alone at the time, but heck, I used to walk by the old Solo liquor on 4th St by myself near midnight... I'm just not afraid of anything.

The biggest worry these days is getting hit by a crane.

That neighbourhood practically doesn't exist anymore. I was down there a few weeks ago (during the day) and it was deserted. It didn't seem like a place many people (seedy or not) would be hanging out at any time of the day. I really don't know what it's like at night, but it felt like a ghost town.

The corner store is closed down but in the window they have a picture of a product endorsed by a smiling Mary Lou Retton.

I always thought it was a church, but with no facts to base that assumption on.
A very long time ago used to catch the 24 bus to Ogden right around there; don't ask why! Was exciting to say the least. Had two men approach once and ask for cigarettes; I responded that I didn't smoke. It was was of those situations you just have a feeling is going to escalate. Next they just kind of stood around in my personal space, then said, "maybe you should give us some money so we can buy some?" I asked if it was a rhetorical question. Luckily for me or them maybe, the bus came and they ran off like it was a police car.
I imagine I would still think twice about walking around that area late at night.

Man people in the suburbs are so paranoid. I'm living in Ramsay and walk that way to go towards 17th or downtown. Never had a problem once. Really it's more quiet than anything.

I used to live across the street from that park when i was in college.

Great place to live by the way - me nor my buds over a span of 6 years had a problem walking through Victoria ParK, especially enroute back from 1 street or 17 ave after last call.

Anyways those ruins are of the very first hospital in Calgary

Quote:
On May 22, 1895, the Cottage Hospital was replaced by the Calgary General Hospital, a sandstone building constructed for that purpose on 12th Avenue and 6th Street SE. The virtues of the new 35-bed hospital were summarized in Hospital President Amos Rowe's introduction to the Annual Report of 1895: "We now possess a first-class building fully furnished, a medical staff of ability and skill, and thoroughly trained nurses."

Where's that quote from? Got a link? The friend I was with when we walked by would be curious to know about the ruins...

That's not what I said. I've peed outside, just never on a street. Generally when I pee outside, I'm camping. I'm also not 'common' as you so delicately put it. I am a unique, one of a kind individual.

Most of that area was bought up by stampede for expansions. The rest just north has been bought by two developers. One is Torode, who owns most of the blocks between 11th and 12th. He is building Arriva and several other projects. Just north of that is what will become 'Railtown' by Remington development (between 9th and 11th straddling the CPR tracks. The bus barns will also move and become part of that development, which will include a SE LRT station and a high speed rail station eventually. In all Railtown will have about 5000 residents plus about another 3000 on all of Torode's blocks. It will be quite dense, but really great.

I am a community planner for the community association (beltline), Seriously, the area east of 1st street will resemble Dubai in a couple of years with all the cranes. Practically every block in the area around the stampede grounds has major, major development plans. Some of the first are already being built, but there are many more on the cusp.

Nuera (2 towers), Exchange (3 towers - 1200 units), Union Square (two towers), Chocolate, Hotel Arts residential, Kahanoff Centre expansion (three towers - two residential, one commercial), Arriva (three towers), The block west of Arriva, Centuria on the Park, Skytower (being revived by a new developer), Viva, Keynote, Railtown (about 20 residential buildings of varying size.)

All these projects east of 2nd Street SW.
