how good is the PS3 as a Blu-ray DVD player? I am considering getting one, and if it is as good as some of the stand alone Blu-ray players out there, but with a gaming console as an added bonus, then I'm all for it

Apparently Sigma which just came out is decent, but I haven't played it.

It's great as a Blu-ray player. It sucks as a console. There isn't a good game out for it and by the looks of things GTA, which is out in October, is going to be the first. Oi.
Lowering the price doesn't address the problem. Wii is actually FUN.

I'm probably going to pick one up within the month. Some decent games are finally starting to come out and the $100 price drop is nice.

it sucks because there are so few games, or are there other issues?
If it is just the lack of good games, that is something that will be fixed over time, and something I could live with since I'd want it more for the the Blu-ray player

Yes, it is just the lack of games. I'm playing Final Fantasy Tactics on it.

It's the lack of games at this point. I'm a huge PS2 fan but I've held off on buying a PS3 as I knew a price-drop would be coming and most of the good games are still not out yet. However, the good games are starting to get pumped out now and I have a feeling the PS3s are going to start selling a lot more quickly now.
Heck, the PS3 has jumped to the top of Amazon's video game sales chart so the price drop has obviously already had a big positive impact.

i hope that this means that the xbox price drops too. although i have one already, the bigger the installed hardware base the more software is made for the platform.

They also are going to bring an 80GB model to market.
One thing though is if you are going to buy one and being able to play PS2 games on it is important to you, get it right after the price drop. Apparently the 80GB version that is coming out is going to be using software emulation like the PAL versions of the PS3 rather than the actual PS2 Emotion Engine chips that are included in the current PS3's being sold in N.A., and soon after that will trickle down to the 60GB and lower versions.
360 will probably drop prices as well, but the rumours about the new chips for the 360 are picking up and it'd be a good idea to wait for that if wanting a 360.. cooler and hopefully much lower failure rate.

Good game. I remember playing that ages ago on the PS1.
Was that re-released for PS2 or can the PS3 play original PS games?

Might be worth it. But I'm at a point where I can;t justify spending any amount of money on video games. Why I can't I be 12 again and just wish really hard for it around christmas time...

It is great as a DVD player. I've seen people suppose that you would need to buy a $1000 blu-ray player to match the PS3 quality. Dont worry about buying the DVD remote - the bluetooth controller works awesome. Once you master which buttons provide what DVD functionality there is no reason to have a DVD remote. I've used mine more as a BR player than console, but it is nice to have the console there for the few games I do like to play.
Make sure you take advantage of the 5 free movies too, from now until the end of September. Photon stole my idea - I was just about to post that very link. Oh well, it deserves to be posted twice so as not to be missed.

Futureshop.ca is already showing the price as $550.

Yes, you can. However, I find my high end Panasonic DVD player does a better job of upscaling. But, the PS3 would be better than the run of the mill dvd player.

Just about every analyst is predicting MS to announce 360 price drop by the time their keynote address rolls around at E3 tonight. It's 20 months old and around the 18 month mark is when console makers look to drop the price. Be interesting to see what that does to any momentum PS3 may have gained with the price drop (it had no momentum being solidly in last place in North America getting outsold 4:1 by Wii and 2:1 by the 360 which is a year older).
Another interesting article on Reuters. Kazumi Kitaue the head of the European and North american gaming division for Konami was very vocal on thinking the PS3 price cut may not be enough. He then pretty blatantly lobbed a threat over to Sony that MGS4 may have to also go to other hardware. A direct quote wasn't used but the phrase is not written as reporter speculation but as something Kitaue mentioned. This is in line with some recent comments from a PR guy at Konami mentioning it could run on 360 hardware and that PS3 owners have no cause to complain if the game goes to other consoles as long as it is still available for the PS3. If the game was removed from the PS3 platform then they have something to complain about. Not to mention the last trailer which removed the PS3 logo. Looks more and more like MGS4 will be multi-platform. Question is really becoming how much of a timed exclusive is it?

Strange buisness practice, PS3 allows you to swap the existing hard drive with another so why release a larger model with a $/gb price that is crazy priced compared to a store bought HD.
Isnt it funny, the 360 is the most open platform available from M$ and its actually selling well. Strange, very strange
PS, I love the way the 360 interacts with Vista Home Premium, it it wasnt for the lack of DivX support, the 360 would be almost perfect.
