Baseball or softball?

For a younger kid DO NOT buy too small of a glove. Definitely go to Play it Again and try on gloves. It will be broken in and cheaper. Ask if Troy is there, he is very knowledgeable.

Get a leather glove, and it will last. A poorly broken-in but good-quality glove can be 'saved' relatively easily if it still has structure. If it is a pancake, leave it.

I would strongly suggest finding one that can be adjusted at the wrist and has a 'hand strap' inside the glove. This will be tight on the hand, and then they can control the glove, even if it is bigger. Then it will stay on their hand, even if it is a bit big, and they can grow into it, but there is a point where too big is too big.

For softball, which starts with an 11" ball and moves to a 12" ball, the minimal size I would recommend is a 12" glove. Most infielders use a 12.5 to 12.75 glove, which is adequate for an outfielder until they are much older and competitive.

Adjust the sizes accordingly for baseball. A baseball is 9" and does not change as the player ages.

Whatever you do, make sure it is broken in properly. The best way to do this is to play catch with it. If you have access to a pitching machine, stand there for thirty minutes, catching balls coming as fast as you can handle. Absolute by the University has lanes to rent.

Also, if you end up buying a bat, make sure your kid can swing it. Have them swing it really hard and see if they have to "get it going" or if they can get a quick whip motion. Have them take the bat and hold it by the end and see if they can hold it out at shoulder height with one hand. That will give you a pretty good idea if it is too heavy. Most parents buy a bat that is way too long and heavy. Also, spend minimally as they will need another one when they get older and bigger.

For what it is worth, a batting tee and front toss are the best ways to teach hitting. A bownet will be a great investment if they stay with it.

I spent a totally unreasonable amount of time researching my kids new glove this winter. I agree with Titan's post, but did want to add there are youth and adult size hand openings in each size range.

So at that age you could get a 11.5" glove in adult or youth hand opening, and obviously you'd want the youth size. Especially important if you're buying a used one where they may not be as well sorted.

I will chime in with a little of my dime-store Softball wisdom...take with salt.

When I got back into softball I got a new glove and got all kinds of weird advice like driving over it or putting it into the oven. I didn't do any of those things because they sounded like nonsense, but I'm no professional.

What I did do however, and I felt it worked out okay, is bought a Softball, put it into the glove and when I was done playing and went home, I'd put that ball into the glove and tie the thing up with bungee cords so for the whole week it was tightly wound around the ball.

It creates a nice, sweet pocket that feels like it just sucks the ball into it!

Anyways, I dont know if that helps. Your mileage may vary.

This is a good point but it depends on the kid. If they can manage the bigger hand opening, particularly if it has a strap as described above, then the bigger one will last longer. Nothing worse than trying to get a teenager to change something they have had for years.

As to Locke's post, I agree completely. I meant to come back to this and add it so thanks. You should ALWAYS have a ball in the glove when you are not using it. A velcro strap is ideal for this as the kid can do it.

If you watch the video and any of the multitudes out there, the pros use a mallet looking wood 'hammer' to break down the fibre in the glove. This is pretty hardcore and I would think only for the advanced players. You will see in the video that that breaking down the area around the heel of the glove is the most important part.
