The homeless and drug situation in the downtown core is beyond out of control. I'm not sitting here pretending to know the answers but something has to give.
Put actual cops on each platform for 6 months and review the incident levels. If it’s then proven to be helpful keep them there permanently.

It's not beyond out of control.
And I'd rather have 2 cars on the weekends, aside from game times, if it increases efficiency.
The two-car thing is a step backwards, that's my issue with it. I remember seeing two cars on the weekends 15+ years ago. Yes, it's obviously more efficient but we need to be asking why we're taking this step back. The city transformed 7th ave and all their stations to make it four cars and from my vantage point monday-friday I rarely see four cars.

I had to take the train a couple weeks ago and somebody (not me) had literally shat on it.
That is the end of taking the train for me. I will literally not take it anymore from here on out to the best of my ability. It was so disgusting.
Yes there is a problem and we desperately need to care for homeless people. Insane it has gotten to this point. Raise my taxes, do what is necessary. Jesus Christ.

For a year now, the Red Line has been limited to 3-cars because of upgrades being done at the 4-car storage site at Haysboro.
I ride it every work day. Are there sleeping people? Yes. Sometimes drug use on the platform? Yes, I guess so. Saw one person get sick on the train last year, that's it. Fights? Never seen one in 15 years of riding. Never have seen defecation or urination on either a train or a platform.
The security people take people who are just riding back and forth for shelter off from time to time but they are pretty decent about it and I've never seen a fuss.
A lot of this is overblown or people have turned one bad experience into "this is how it always is". And a lot is just people who don't want to see homeless people around.

Because they don't need to haul 4 cars on the weekend?

Yeah, I don't see the issue here. Is it a step back in prestige or something? Large buses get replaced with smaller ones during non-peak hours; is that a step backwards too?

Different for peak times vs non peak times? I take the train maybe 2-3 times a year. Last time there was a guy smoking crack on the train. He was nice enough guy and was blowing the smoke out the windows but makes you think about letting young teenagers take the train after school sports. This was at around 6:30-7ish pm
Much different experience vs homeless just taking a snooze and escaping the cold

I guess my only concern would be...who is determining these 'Peak and non-Peak times?'
Because my faith in Calgary Transit's ability to interpret data and make decisions? Its...its fair to say that faith isnt 'up there.'
Maybe just run a route and keep doing it?

It's a good learning experience for them. Stay off drugs kids! See what happens to your life, you end up riding the train all day with a bunch of teenagers!

The "windows" are way up top, so he was standing on a seat?
Back to 3 cars on Saturday. Great job with the math work CT.

I would assume that they have been tracking usage numbers regularly for years. More difficult to do with the trains than buses, but doesn't CT public release usage numbers somewhere?

Calgary Transit uses Automatic Passenger counters (APC) on the LRT. It is not always the most precise
Found a relatively recent article regarding passenger count for research
They've already tweaked the pilot to keep 3 cars on Saturdays, and 2 cars on Sundays.
Quote:
MARCH 29 UPDATE: Based on ridership data and customer feedback following the pilot launch, we will be returning three-car trains to the tracks on Saturdays to support the higher demand, and make sure the right amount of service is available for events. Sundays and holidays will still see two-car trains, with additional floaters at the ready to provide additional service during busier periods. We will continue to monitor ridership levels and feedback throughout the pilot period and make adjustments as needed to ensure service continues to match the demand!

Going to start taking photos and videos to see what I see. Though I rarely take the train now because of the issues.
