That would definitely get it done (IMO). I still think that one wouldn't have to go that high to sign a rookie with only 10g and 12a in his rookie campaign... but I think any number above 3-3.5 should get it done.

My guess is that they start with a D to try and trade out. If they punt one of Harley, Dumba, or Lyubushkin then that frees up 3-4 mill. But then they have to turn around and immediately give some of that to Lundkvist who is going to want a raise on his $1.25M. It gives them enough room to sign some players but not enough to match a big raise on Bourque.

After that they either are moving Marchment or ... Seguin? It starts to get dicy to pull off the generic comment of "make a trade or two".

I do think that they need to get guys like Frost, Zary, Coronato, Wolf signed first. The worst thing they could do is overpay a guy like Bourque on an offer sheet and then another team turns around and targets one of our own

At the moment, PuckPedia has the Flames at a cap hit of $58,362,500 for next season, for 8 forwards, 5 defencemen, and a goalie. That leaves them about $37 million to pay nine players, including Frost, Coronato, and Zary. (Wolf has another year to run at $850,000.)

Capwages has a new-ish feature, a cute little pop-up on contracts expiring this summer that gives AFP Analytics's estimate of what the player could be expected to sign for. AFP has Frost, Coronato, and Zary each signing for between $5.5m and $6m, which seems likely enough. That leaves $19m for six players, or more than $3m each. If you offer-sheet Bourque for 4.5 to 5 (giving up a 2nd-round pick), you still have more than $14m left for the last five players on the roster. The only other significant RFA is Bahl.

There is no chance that an offer sheet in that range would put the Flames in any danger of going over the cap.

I am not so sure
They are in win now mode and they are going to spend their cap to achieve that
That’s a lot of cap for a largely unproven guy

I don’t know Bourque is 25 and hasn’t don’t much. He is not worth the gamble.

Bourque just turned 23 in January. For a 2nd round pick it is for sure worth the gamble.

Do the Flames try to work with the Stars and offer to take Seguin with a sweetener like Bischel some lower end roster player. Keep the picks and move Andersson retained to help get a young top center prospect. Move Seguin the following year (or draft) with full retention to a contender for higher pick/prospect. That will bear a better return prospect than offer sheets ever will.

Doubt Seguin would waive but this is the way you have to weaponize cap space, not offer sheets.

Can’t see cap space being weaponized anymore with the rising cap. Conroy even said that himself.

It's one thing to have terrible takes, but it's another to have the facts wrong to prove your point. This and the Janko thread show what a terrible troll you are.

For what it may be worth, AFP Analytics (as cited on Capwages) thinks Bourque should be signing for 2 × $1,862,250. The Stars can certainly afford to pay him that, but if he's still unsigned in July and gets an offer sheet, he could very easily price himself out of their plans.

Signing Rantanen for $12m a year and Johnston for 8.4 is going to cost them in other areas. But as Super Chicken used to say, ‘You knew the job was dangerous when you took it.’

Russo has it at 70% the Wild trade Rossi cause he is too small. I feel like Conroy will chase that one down.

Troll my ass
It’s my ####ing opinion

So I got his age wrong, he still hasn’t done much to worth the trouble of an offer sheet. They don’t do it as often

As for Janko, he is a journeyman that had some hot streak some time, that’s my point. Do you have any data that he is not?

Would you get a player of Bourque’s calibre with a 2nd? Highly, highly dubious.

Where will he play ? Kadri and Frost are going no where. Backlund has a year left.

If you want to see someone breakout you have to play them. We have limited spots and limited spots for our own players.
