The NHL has already put a plan in place that includes a limit of 7 minutes for on ice celebration when he breaks the record. I really hope he does it at home

Tying goal with 4 minutes left in the game. 6 to go.

Hopefully he gets it done this year. It would suck if he had to come back for one goal.

You realize he has a contract for next season right? He's coming back regardless.

Sure. But what I meant was if he pulls it off this year the sense of urgency will make it a lot more dramatic.

If he’s coming back in next season to score one goal you’ll lose all of that. He’ll have a whole season to score one goal.

Yawn.

6 goals in 11 games will be tough, but if anyone can do it it's the great 8.

I thonk it would be kind of fun, there would be that anticipation that is first goal of the season Is the record breaker.

Unless he retires, he's back next season anyway. Can't see him walking away from $9M unless theres some sort of significant injury.

If he just keeps his average this season (0.65 / game) he should hit it with a game to spare. Obviously that's not how it always works, but I agree that if anyone can do it, it's him.

Might be gripping the stick a little tighter in the final games trying to get there. Or he might just explode like can at at times, who knows. Right now I'm leaning towards needing a couple more next season to break the record.

NHL would love it as they could hype it up so much all summer and training camp, trying to get viewers back into hockey.

His teammates might become so fixated on feeding OV the puck that they become predictable and easy to defend the rest of the season. Their opponents are trying to win, and won’t want to be captured for posterity as the team getting scored on and leaning against their sticks while the Caps celebrate.

Retiring would also screw over the team. I doubt that is how he wants to end his career.

I would guess that he would rather play next season, get paid, and see how many goals he can put onto his total to make it harder for the next guy to challenge the record.

He's indicated he'll retire if/when he breaks the record and is eager to move back to Russia.

Those are scattered quotes going back to 2019. His most recent was that he would finish his current NHL contract, it's also in the link you posted.

Watch, his record breaking goal will called back after a 4 minute review on a borderline offside.

Credited to someone else after the on ice celebration would definitely be the worst.
