Not saying at all what Ras might be worth, but for ALL contract signing going forward, we must recognize that the cap is going up quite rapidly, which means that dollar amounts on contracts are going to be going up rapidly too.

I don't think there will be much negotiation between Ras and the team. He wants a chance to win, and that's not going to be here. I think the player and team have agreed to handle this in a manner where Ras has some say in where he goes, while the team preserves the opportunity to get us much value as possible. Basically none of the stuff that happened last year where it became clear players weren't going to sign here and were going to be very narrow in terms of where they would go.

Younger and more goal production than Rasmus.
Rasmus plays more though.
For the Caps, this is the perfect age to sign a guy to an 8 year deal.

Good for him. He was stuck in pheonix and shuffled around quite a bit ahead of this season

He might settle for a Hanifin deal if it was a team like Vegas. Cap inflation and Canadian team, anyone who thinks we will like the deal he gets is being unrealistic.
Good thing is, I trust Conroy won't cave in and he will be traded this summer. Hoping a big draft day move or a few days before the draft.

I think the Ras ask is the Hanifin deal. I bet he would settle for 8x7. Not a deal the flames should be making.
Conny likely offers him 6 years x 7 mil and they either meet in the middle at 7x7 or the relationship goes south.
|
Hanifin signed at $7.35/year last off season. With cap inflation that's probably $8.5 this off season.

I like this deal if Calgary is looking to re-sign Ras. Chychrun is younger (All 8 of these years will be his prime years), scores more points, scores quite a few more goals, and can effectively run a power play.
Rasmus is a little more of an all arounder who plays more all situation minutes, and he's a right handed d, but this reaffirms his max contract hit at $7-$7.5m x 8 years if he wants to resign in Calgary.
Otherwise, he'll get traded.

Chychryn is still pretty young and buying those 26 to 29 years which is half this deal would be the premium years on a guy like him. He's more like Hanifin than Anderson because of the age, but a better goal scorer.
There's no real back nine on this deal as he'd be 33 when it's done. So that's a major difference.

The Caps were the last team in the league to secure a playoff spot last season, and the first this season.
I had totally written them off and thought they would miss the playoffs this year. Instead....
1. Protas, 2019 3rd round pick emerges as a 30 goal and near PPG player.
2. PLD finally gets his groove back.
3. Chychrun shows that he is a legit top pairing d-man, once he's able to leave bad teams.
4. Logan Thompson proves that he is indeed a #1 goalie.
5. None of the vets take a step back, including Ovy, who somehow increases his scoring pace from last year.
Did not see that coming.

Don't forget Dylan Strome.
Strome and Protras contracts are steals. This could allow them to keep it going post AO

I hope so. Ras is an interesting player, but how his game ages isn't something I'd be willing to bet on.
There's a market for him, but someone else can pay the premium for his good years (next 3-4) and have to stomach the latter part of his next contract. For me he's a poster boy for some buyer's remorse at some point in his next deal.

Good deal for the Caps to secure their top D going forward.
I am not sure that this really sets Andersson's contract value to be as high, but if it does then it also would set his trade value to be high.
The other winners of this deal would be Ekblad & company as the UFA pool all just got a little bit taller with Chychrun off of the board.

They've also got one of the best prospect pools in the NHL (Leonard, Cristall, the younger Hutson, the younger Protas -- who was another 3rd round steal), so they'll likely be on top for a while.
It very much looked like they were about to drop off two years ago.

Yeah. I lean that way too now (although I can see resigning him with the direction Conroy has stated he wants to go and team dynamics).
With Chychrun off the board, and Ekblad getting suspended for performance enhancers, Pionk is the best untarnished defender available--and he may still re-sign with the Jets.
Andersson's value at the draft, oddly enough, could be the highest it's been, particularly with where prices were at this past trade deadline. If a team wants a top pairing right shot defender, he'll be the guy.
I'm not sure Conroy will be bold enough to trade him though, unless Rasmus' demands are way out of line.

That other Protas brother looks great. 6'5'' and 2nd in the entire OHL in scoring at only 18. It'll be a lot of fun to watch the two brothers play together.

There's definitely some volatility there given the histories of PLD, Chychrun, and Strome. One, two, or all three could revert back to pumpkins and time will always win the battle vs the veteran players.

The Capitals or Jets are going to win the president's trophy...I'm quite confident the streak of President's trophy winners not winning the cup will continue this year.

After trading Markstrom, I do not believe there is any issue with how bold Conroy may or may not be. Conroy is showing he has a plan and he likely has a number for making the decision to sign or trade Andersson. They will likely have a serious conversation at the end of the season about next steps and either lay the groundwork for an extension that both parties can work with or set the stage to work on the trade.
Then you look at the RD depth chart:
Weegar
Andersson
Pachal
Miromanov
Parekh
Brzustewicz
Mews
That group is definitely better with Andersson, at least for a couple of years while Parekh and then Brzustewicz establish themselves.
Moving to Weegar, Pachal/Miromanov, Parekh would be tough but it would open the door for Parekh to start on the third line until he can take the second pair spot away. Also, Team Tank would be drooling over this D group and how it is almost guaranteed to get us a top 5 draft pick.... just like how we thought we were going to draft in the top 5 this season.

A lot of guys having career years as well, and a goalie that is 31-4.
It's probably not sustainable given the age of some of the guys they have.
