News Roundup

A look back at FlamesNation’s New York trip

It’s Sunday, and we’re sitting in John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York awaiting our flight back to Calgary following six days in the New York metropolitan area covering the Calgary Flames’ three road games.
We thought it would be fun to take a quick look back on the trip and give you a bit of a glimpse of how things went behind the scenes.

6 Things the Flames Need to Do to Make the Playoffs

Despite being on the outside looking in playoff-wise, the Flames are in a great position with two games in hand over the St. Louis Blues. They also hold the tiebreaker in regulation wins, meaning that as of now, they control their own destiny when it comes to making the playoffs. In order to do that, they will need to ensure they do these six things to the best of their ability.

Flames heading home with considerable momentum after another dramatic win

Asked for a post-game glimpse into his New York state of mind, Jonathan Huberdeau exhaled.

“That’s a hell of a road trip,” said the man about to board a charter flight home, where the lads can be proud of the franchise’s first three-game sweep through the tri-state area.

“A lot of emotion like that, you just want to sit back and have a nice beer now.”

The Jacob Markstrom trade might go down as Craig Conroy’s finest piece of work

The Calgary Flames did extremely well in acquiring Kevin Bahl and a first-round pick from the New Jersey Devils for Jacob Markstrom last year, but those two pieces are still secondary reasons why they won that particular trade.
Especially in a year where their own first-round draft choice could potentially end up with the Montreal Canadiens, the Flames needed to give themselves another bullet in 2025’s top 32. By the looks of it, that pick could end up in the late teens. But it’s not why they won the trade.

Flames prospect roundup: Playoff Primer edition

It’s post-season time for the Calgary Flames prospects.
This is the Mar. 17-23 edition of the Calgary Flames prospect roundup, where we look at how Calgary Flames prospects did this past week, specifically those at the junior and college levels.

Keep the momentum from the road trip going at home tonight! Seattle are always a tough out so I hope there is no lapse in energy since getting home. Go Flames!

I think there's a non zero chance Backlund plays tonight.

Hopefully Weegar is back soon too.

Go Flames!

They have to beat the teams below them at home. The Blues are not slowing down.

Just make sure this doesn't become a trap game.

Offense is starting to spread out between top 2 lines. Get our 3rd line going and we have depth scoring. Hoping for a Backlund, Farabee and Weegar return.

Go Flames Go!

Yeah, first home game after a longer road trip can be difficult.

Yeah not sure we've seen a better top nine if the two forwards return.

No spot for Sharangovich, which will be interesting. He's playing terribly, but do you let him slide to the fourth line and hope he gives them a boost?

Huska pretty much bailed on his fourth line on the trip. Rooney has averaged 7.5 minutes of five on five all season, but just 6.3 in the three games in the NY area.

If I were a betting person I'd say they sit Sharangovich tonight. I believe Backlund & Rooney were on the PK units at practice yesterday?

I'm fully on the playoff train now. I want in, rebuild and high draft picks be damned!

Time to forget about how much some players are getting paid and just ice the guys that are going. I'm okay if he spends a night or two in the pressbox. Now is not the time of year to keep propping up a slumping player in hopes he gets going. Sometimes a few games in the pressbox will accomplish just as much to light a fire under the player.

I'd like Sharangovich in 4th line in place of Rooney.

While I agree, I don't think there is a fire to light in this particular case. His season is lost. He never got over the injury from pre-season and its time to just sit him down for the year. If they make the playoffs, maybe he comes in then. But even at that point, I don't think he'll be right.

Every game is a must win until the end of the season. Can't afford any mini losing streaks if we hope to make the playoffs
