Medical research is huge and massive numbers of researchers have just lost their jobs and active research tat could be restarted here.
Or we could shut the door.

Interesting idea if we could poach an industry segment from another country

The idea of making the best of this current political climate by poaching some of America's top scientific, medical and entrepreneurial talent to move north of the border is a terrific one. Hell, the Netherlands apparently is already starting to do this.

I am curious if you have the slightest idea what is happening south of the 49th? What intelligent american would NOT at least be considering leaving that burgeoning dictatorship right now?

The great majority of people make the life-changing decision to move to another country based on their personal finances. Most of the people losing their jobs from DOGE are civil servants who will not be able to transfer their experience and tenure to another country. And educated private sector workers in the U.S. make substantially more than their Canadian counterparts and typically pay less for housing. There just aren’t many people willing to abandon their social network and take a 20+ per cent hit to their standard of living on political grounds.

1) Affordable cost of living
a $350k condo in Calgary is 242k USD. Some of these people could completely get out of their mortgages on similar sized places like SF / Seattle that are over $1M and use the equity to buy a home full stop. I paid $30USD for two tacos last time I was in Seattle. I saw a pecan pie for $49 last time I was in SF. Taxes in most parts of USA are actually higher than Taxes in Canada when you factor in municipal income taxes and municipal sales taxes. While their jobs pay well, their standard of living isn't really all that special.
2) Mild summers. Invite them to come experience July anywhere on this country. Too much is made about our cold winters (as if elite professionals don't spend a lot of time indoors anyways) and too little is
3) The possibility of growing some of these industries in some of our most underutilized (and underpriced) land, which we have in abundance. Imagine if a place like Black Diamond was the research lab for a pharmaceutical company. It's ####ing gorgeous out there, yet only a ~twenty minute drive from Okotoks which itself is not far from Calgary. I was out in Hartel for work last year and it was just lovely.
4) Regulations that are actually favourable to the upper middle class. Clean air you don't get in Los Angeles. Food without preservatives.
5) Make crown corporations in the right industries. An EV manufacturer in Ontario?
6) Safety from school shootings for their kids
At the end of the day though, it can only happen if Canadians don't fail our country by voting Conservative. Not much of an escape from a fascist regime if you're coming to a fascist regime.
Canada has corporate investment issues, I don't pretend to have a ton of answers. And our cold winters are indeed a tough sell on anyone. But if someone is on the fence, I think inviting them to see the better parts of this wonderful country is a no-brainer.

I like the idea that you couldn't finish this point with a straight face and just... gave up.

I'll guess that 99% of these Americans today say no. The idea of lower wages, higher taxes, and living in cold climates likely outweighs ideals. There's still almost 70% of that country that didn't vote for the Orange fascist and plenty of wealthy folks who can create like jobs in the private sector.
That said, no harm in trying and building up these industries as a national objective even if it only attracts a low number of Americans now. Plus if you invest in it now and the Americans continue to self sabotage...than more will change their mind. This country already has a lot of underutilized skill, and I do think that Canada has long relied on extracting dumb low level resources. We need to develop more knowledge and value add to move our economy forward.

Despite the recent rumors Mark Carney is not running in Edmonton. He is taking a safe seat outside of Ottawa. I was hoping to see a hard fought battle in Edmonton Centre between Carney, the CPC and the NDP candidate but this move obviously makes a lot more sense.

Two Western born-and-raised party leaders and they’re both running in Laurentia. How tragic.

It will take a bit for things to really set in in America, but I have a close friend who is an MD doing his residence in Michigan. He says no one he knows would move to Canada. He was living in Vancouver before he went to Med school and he says Michigan is shockingly cheaper and no one even cares about politics. He follows Canadian news/socials and thinks we're hysterical.
Anecdotal with a small sample size, but clearly not everyone would come running.
I do think trying to scoop the available talent is smart.

I think the talent' Canada can steal isnt white and american, it's the vast numbers of highly qualified immigrant brown talent that the US no longer wants likes and plans to ship to El Salvador

I think this is fair, but I also think the Venn of the people we want to recruit and the people who would consider climate, wage, taxes... secondary to better work opportunities and circumstances is not very elongated.
