Markstrom can't play his old team. That sucks. He's played two bad games against Calgary this year. Might be in his head. Glad they're not playing them anymore. Also, Coleman just can't lose against his former team either. All super annoying.

Reminds me of what we used to say about him playing Edmonton ...

Markstrom is a head case, we witnessed the same exact type of stuff in Calgary. Wolf has such a different demeanour than his predecessor. He is cool, calm and collected. Never yells at his teammates, never points blame to others, just locks back in and battles. Wish we had him against the Oilers in the playoffs. The team that year just deflated once Markstrom lost his marbles. Markstrom never played better when he was ticked off, it doesn’t seem like a good trait to have as a goalie.

Ron Hextall would disagree...and if you disagreed with Ron Hextall you got a blocker in the teeth!

Caught the replay. Nice to see ol' Chokestrom on the other end of the ice this time.

Great comeback. Great trade.
But man the Markstrom under the bus crowd is a little excessive to me. Was a good guy, good teammate and a solid Flame in his time in Calgary.
4th all time in GP, wins, career .907, almost won a Vezina.
Over the top.

I don't take any pleasure in piling on ex-Flames but IMO Markstrom has always been a flawed NHL starting goaltender. Just way too many peaks and valleys and confidence issues vs certain teams.

"4th all time in wins" isn't exactly a strong retort when the team doesn't even win often.

There's 50 feet of crap, then there's Lemelin and Markstrom, then there's 50 miles of crap, then there's everyone else who has ever played goal for the Flames.

TBH the whole team did.
Markstrom's numbers were terrible that series - but the Flames also gave the Oilers two most dangerous players way too much time and space.
Oilers shot 22.97% with McDavid and Draisaitl together on the ice in that series.
They shot 8.43% when they were off the ice.
Flames gave up 34(!) high danger chances, and 72 Scoring chances with those two on the ice in the 101 minutes they played together.
5.17 xGF per 60
42.7 SCF per 60
20.1 HDCF per 60
So yeah Markstrom was part of the problem still (9 HDGA, 6 MDGA, 2 LDGA with 29/97 on the ice) but coaching and the teams inability to counter the McDavid-Draisaitl line once they were united were the biggest issue. When 2 guys combine for 29 points in 5 games it's not on just the goalie.
TBH Sutter probably should wear more of the blame than Markstrom does. He failed to line match or figure out a solution to those 2.

He was pure god mode against the Stars in the playoffs. We wouldn't all have the memory of Johnny's game 7 winner if it wasn't for Marky getting us there.
He sucked against the Oilers but so did everyone else

Yeah, some people think putting in Vladar would have changed the series but I highly doubt it. The whole team just played like ass and their best players were no-shows when they could have used a big goal.

They completely abandoned the forecheck when McDavid was on the ice, and instead got turnstiled standing still in the neutral zone.
Complete collapse of the hockey that got them there.

Markstrom let in too many leaky goals like the Zary one last night, in game 1 vs Oilers and that was it for his confidence and while he did make some big saves, some of the average ones went in.
Flames were in control of game 2 until a couple sequences where we hit posts and Oilers got a fluke the other way.
The paring of Andersson and Hanifin played like junk all series. In Game 3 the Oilers got 6, 2 on 1s in the late first and early second, 4 of them with Andersson and Hanifin on, and the Oilers scored on 3 of them, not Markstroms fault. He made saves on the other 3.
Game 4 similar, way too many odd man rushes or missed assignments to give the Oilers clear looks it's like Hanifin and Andersson were paralyzed with second guessing and had no confidence by the end of game 3.
A huge factor too was Tanev out for those first 3 games, they had no one to settle things down on the ice or at that end of the bench.

His weaknesses were the Oilers, pressure, and weak shots aimed at center mass. Nah I'll stick with it.

Anyways, holding the Rangers to no goals for 58 mins was solid. Last night's games are the one that can counteract the ones where they lost, such as the Vancouver one on Sunday.
Biggest thing still is the Flames still control their own destiny to the playoffs, as we sit here March 21. Only a handful here would've suggested that last September or even December.

I’ll never be convinced the flames were embarrassed in that series Vs Edmonton. They were second best team for sure but three of the four losses were tied games in the third period. Those are close games. Flames couldn’t find the clutch third period goal. And when they did, the league jumped in and said it was kicked in.
Losing in 5 looks bad but when you break it down game by game, the series was closer than people remember.
