Oh for sure, I've reread quite a few Niven and other sci-fi novels of my youth lately and yeah that kind of thing is pretty common (I mean it came out in 1974).

But I like the whole premise of the Motie system and culture and why they've been bottled up and the impact that's had. The slow reveal is pretty well done.

On the gripping hand it's probably not as a totally realistic portrayal of what first contact would be like but when I first read it it was more of an attempt than a lot of other stuff I'd read to that point.

Yeah I really liked that book in high school but I suspect if I read it again it wouldn't hold up.

Y'all probably need to put down (gently) whatever you're reading and pick up Red Rising and sequels (there are 7 books now).

Best series I have read in ages. The final book slated to come out early next year. The first is pitched as something like Hunger Games but DONT FALL INTO THIS TRAP. Book 2 opens up to essentially more violent game of thrones in space.

Tonight I’m going to start listening to Infinite Jest. 64 hours, 11 minutes.

I got into that series last year. The first few books were great.

I think I stopped around book 4 or 5. I read them back to back and I think I just started getting bored.

I’ll need to pick them up again soon and finish the series.

(And I’m surprised this hasn’t been made into a movie series!)

You can't go wrong with Alistair Reynolds but if you have Chasm City up next you probably already know that. Robert Charles Wilson has some really good books, John Scalzi too though a bit lighter. Have you tried Adrian Tchaikovsky yet? Children of Time is great.

Books 4 and 5 are hard reads. 4 might be the worst of the series, and 5 is just pain to everything you love. But halfway through 5 you see where it's going and 6 is probably the best one. Totally recommend reading through Lightbringer.

I feel like an HBO or long run FX series would be best.

The Road to Wisdom — On Truth, Science, Faith, and Trust by Francis Collins. I’m a big fan. He’s getting into conspiracy theories, scientific and medical research and study, vaccine skepticism.

We’ll see how far I get this time.

I watched an unsettling documentary about pornography a few weeks ago. In a discussion group about it they mentioned DFW’s essay, Big Red Son, which is about the adult video awards convention he attended. I checked out a video of him reading that essay on YouTube. So I guess that kinda put me in mind of trying IJ again.

For the baseball enthusiasts. A New York Game by Kevin Baker. Good read on the rise of baseball running parallel to the rise of New York City. Don’t worry haters, not remotely Yankee-centric.

Chain-Gang All-Stars is the debut novel of American author Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chain-Gang_All-Stars

Quote:
Chain-Gang All-Stars is set in a dystopian near-future America where prison systems have been transformed into a brutal, televised blood sport called the Criminal Action Penal Entertainment (CAPE) program. This system pits inmates, known as "Chain-Gang All-Stars," against each other in deadly gladiatorial combat called BattleGround for the entertainment of the masses and potential freedom for the surviving victors.
I’m sure this could be a (violent) series on a streaming service.
