He does, but a one way contract only affects his salary in the AHL. He would still have to go through waivers before he can be sent down, like he did at the beginning of this season. It also doesn't have an effect on the Flames' salary cap, since it is below the maximum cap-hit($1.15M) a team's allowed to burry in the AHL.

Before Cooley's injury, he was a top 2 goalie in the AHL, and had the backup role locked up for next year. Cooley has 2 wins in his last 15 games since coming back from his injury. In that time period, he allowed 54 goals(3.6 goals/game), and had a save percentage of 87.4%.

I guess it comes down to the amount of competition that you want in training camp, and how worried are you about losing the 3rd best goalie in training camp to waivers.

So starters need to be “extremely sheltered” to do well?

The other impact of the decision is the plan Conroy has for this team. Trade Rasmus? Trade Coleman? Go with a younger top 9? Play Parekh? Might be good to have someone play 35 games and Wolf gets 47 games. Might be a tougher year next year than it was this year, and it would also help control Wolf's contract too.

I really like Vladar. I still think he ends up being a solid starter somewhere.
People said this when he re-upped to be the backup to Markstrom.

The guy is a beaut, I hope he stays.

It looks like a pretty even start split to me, at least against the top 10 teams in the NHL:
Code:
Opponent Wolf Vladar
WSH 1 1
WPG 2 1
DAL 1 1
CAR 1 1
VGK 0 2
COL 2 0
FLA 1 1
TBL 1 1
TOR 2 0
EDM 0 2

To quote DM….

“You can’t deny that he has sheltered Wolf, taking the second of back to backs all but once”

That’s what I meant by “sheltering”.

That’s when most teams historically use their backup.

He's a backup with a bad glove hand and limited rebound control.

Which is fine. Because he's a backup.

Despite these things, he can win some of games he gets thrown to the wolves in. He's also an experienced NHL influence on our rookie star. So if I'm Calgary I burn some of those acres and acres of cap space to have him stick around.

Like every starter in the league, by that logic.

If he would take a big pay cut on a 1 year deal , I would re-sign him. I’m not sold Cooley is an nhl goalie. If no pay cut then go out and sign a veteran goalie for less than vladdy makes now.

Back-to-back games sure, but most elite goalies play against the best teams. Vladar has played 50% of his games against the 12 teams sitting in the top 3 spots in each division.

Comrie, Desmith and Johannson play around 25%. Johansson has played 5 games and 2 were early when Vasilevsky was hurt.

Not sure if I need to keep looking, but I'm pretty sure elite goalies usually draw the best teams more often than not. Wolf has played 13 of his 41 games against the 12 teams in the top 3 spots in each division.

Even split sure, but 1 has played 27 games 1 has played 41. Split even the other way?

You say..barely a reasonable backup.

Who do we believe?
I wouldn't put much weight on the goaltender coach trying to pump his value for a trade, or perhaps trying to pump his confidence.

Vladar had a large amount of stats which paint him a very poor goalie. There is zero there which suggests he'd be a viable starter in the NHL. Lifetime 3.03 GAA, .893 save %. His GSAA per 82 games is -24.8. That is beyond terrible.

Query why no one has broken down the door trying to trade for a goalie starter?

There are definitely places where Vladar could be a number 1 - Philly, Seattle, possibly Edmonton... I wouldn't say he could be a 'true' number 1 though.

I agree, I'd like to have him back in our current situation. But if I'm Conroy, either looking for 2-4 years sub $2M or a 1 year deal. Nothing too long, no commitments. I think there is a reasonable chance he does better elsewhere if he looks, and if I'm Calgary I'm also OK with him doing better elsewhere.

Situational opposition win percentage

Wolf .550
Vladar .534

That was well in Vladar's direction in the first half of the season, but Wolf has slowly took the harder workload (by opposition) away.

Vladar has had back to backs 8 times, to Wolf's 1.

With Vladar's hip surgery and adjustment post surgery I'd pay attention to recent sample size and consider signing him.

Dacord for Seattle has actually been quite good this year.

Skinner is much better as well.

And while the Philly goaltending situation is a mess, Vladar would only add to the mess. Philly would certainly aim higher.

If he signs for less than he's making now and there isn't a NMC etc then sure.

Vladar isn’t getting a NMC anywhere he signs. I think he’s not getting more than a two year deal anywhere
