A bad listing can just be ignored. A bad buyer is a massive PITA. One deserves private scorn and ridicule while the other deserves rotten fruit in the town square.

Who posts clothing, bikes, skates anything with size variance and goes "selling a hybrid bike, used two years, in great shape" and thinks to their stupid, simple self "there, i nailed that listing, viewers have everything they need"?

I actually put effort into my ads. Any necessary dimensions, etc. are listed, notes about condition with photos, and so on. Unfailingly, I will get incredibly stupid questions that were answered in the ad if they had bothered to read it.

So I wonder if bad buyers and bad sellers are both working to poisoning the market for people who aren’t drooling morons.

What is the etiquette around ghosting on marketplace/kijiji etc.

As a seller I always keep people informed, respond within 24 hours, etc. As long as they’re not being silly (like I’ll just ignore someone if they lowball, I say no chance, and then they respond with another, similar lowball).

But as a buyer, I’ll ask a question and ghost on the regular. Usually I’m just thinking about it, but is that above board? I think it’s fine, but I ghosted a seller recently and felt weird about it for some reason.

As a seller, I would assume that means you are no longer interested, and would rather you do that then waste my time with a message telling me you are no longer interested.

For me it is the interaction that makes me decide.

As a buyer if I ask a question and they respond timely with an answer (that is key, cuz they don't always answer the question).

But if they wait 3-5 days to answer my question or can't be arsed or make an answer up #### it I ghost.

In short, if the exchanges have been polite and kinda what I expected or wanted I will always give the courtesy of saying I'm not interested.

I think buyer etiquette is much looser than seller etiquette just because of the difference in what each side is asking of the other.

If you're a seller, you're asking the buyer to give you money, and presumably to travel to a location of your choosing to complete the transaction. You should be more responsive because you're the one hoping to get paid. I had a FB Marketplace thing a few weeks ago where I offered to come by to pay someone their asking price three different times and each time got the "sorry I didn't see this, can you come by tomorrow instead", rinse and repeat. That's bull####.

If you're the buyer, anything you've done that requires seller to make a real effort or rearrange their day you have to come through on, or give reasonable communication if not. For example, if you want to come see the item and you give a time that you're going to swing by to look at it, you either need to show up or tell them well in advance that you've changed your mind.

But in terms of asking a question and then ghosting after the answer? No big; as a seller I have put forward no real effort by typing out an answer to your question, it hasn't inconvenienced me. I just assume if you don't follow up that you're either no longer interested or the answer led you to the conclusion that what I'm selling isn't what you want.

I get ghosted a lot on FB marketplace, doesn’t bother me. If somebody gets bothered by simple inquiries and it not going anywhere, it’s a red flag - not necessarily for you, but other people in their life.

Pretty sure that was the name. It was pretty scuzzy, I think the entrance to the movie theatre was across from the entrance to the bar.

To me the only thing that annoys me with buyers or sellers is if once a pick up time and agreement to buy or sell an item is agreed to it is stuck to. Before that point no one’s time is being wasted.

So for buyers it’s not purchasing the item if the condition is as described or not showing up. For sellers it’s not being home or selling the item after you’ve have agreed on a time to meet without communicating that it’s still first come first serve. Outside of those things I think people are way too sensitive.

Poor information and high response times from sellers usually means you can get a better deal because people move on to better listed items.

As a seller expect people to low ball you. Ignore them if you find the price to low. Someone asking what’s your lowest price or a low ball gets no response or if I feel like being a dick a higher price than list price.

Sometimes if an add annoys me with how they state no low balls I will just message them with an insultingly low low ball just to annoy them. (Yes that probably makes me an #######)

But if you accept that anonymous online marketplaces have no etiquette rules you will be much happier. Clarify everything, assume nothing and don’t get emotional.

Well I just an all timer on marketplace. I like vintage sports jerseys. Found a Red Boston Red Sox jersey near Chinook Mall. I offered slightly less, he was friendly about it and agreed then asked when I'm coming. Word for word I responded with...
