Hank Aaron finished the 1973 season one home run short of Babe Ruth's record, then he broke it early in the 1974 season.
Throughout the 1973 season and offseason Aaron received thousands of letters every week, many of which were racist death threats.

This is the 70s though...what like he got letters to his house? How did they know his address?
I see where you're coming from though and you're right, Edmontonians have burnt down houses for far less, so I can see that there might be danger there.
Thanks for explaining that to me, I had no idea. Baseball is not my forte.
Now lets play a fun game!
So...Ovechkin supports Putin...Putin supports Trump...Gretzky is a MAGA Trumper...round and round we go, where the wheel stops nobody knows!!

Keep in mind, he's a year older. It's not out of the realm of possibility for someone to think hey, maybe at 39 he'll be more of that player we saw in the first half of last season (0.18 goals per game) versus the last half of last season (0.63 goals per game).
At the start of this season, he had 853 goals so he was 41 goals away from tying it. If he went back to playing like he did at the start of last season or worse (he's 39, remember) it would have taken him 227 games to tie the record.
Instead, he is doing BETTER than he did in the back half of last season at 0.67 goals per game. It's incredible, really.

Yup. I think I read that at 39, Gretzky was able to score 8? OV is a whole other level.

Gretzky's last season he was 38 years old and scored 9 goals and 53 assists in 70 games. The last season he scored 30 was when he was 33. Meanwhile, Ovechkin has scored 30+ 5 times from age 34 up along with 24 in 45 games during the Covid shortened season. Ovechkin's aging curve is unlike anybody we've ever seen.

Selanne, Howe, Jagr, Sakic, Bucyk, Shanahan,...even Martin St. Louis had 29 goals in 62 games at 39.
...Crosby's standing right there.
But yes, Ovechkin's consistency with goal scoring is unmatched. Hence why he is about to beat the all time record. I do think their have been superior seasons by players Ovechkin's age or older though.

No doubt most of them were sent to him at the team's address.

So get 'Phil the Intern' to sift through them, the player never has to see them or even know they exist.
Thats why they pay Phil.

Crosby is poised to beat Gretzky’s record with his 20th straight point-per-game season. It’s being overshadowed by Ovechkin’s goal chase, but that’s still a remarkable achievement.

Between Crosby and ovechkin, most of us got to see the full careers of two top 10 players all time. That's pretty neat.

I think other than Orr and Howe, if you were born in the 70’s you saw all the rest.
Howe
Orr
Gretzky
Mario
Jagr
Roy
Bourque
Messier
Crosby
Ovechkin

At his age doing what he is doing this season is pretty incredible. I’m curious to see how many seasons he plays after he gets the record.

Considering what he's done for that club, I bet Leonsis lets him play for however long he wants and pays him whatever he wants.
I predict Ovi will play next season, then go home and the authoritarian regime will use his achievements for propaganda purposes.

If he's still productive, I think he's going to try and get to 1000 goals.
