You need players, or a trio of players that can maintain possession and support one another very effectively.
A lot of our vets play the puck like a hot potato in the o-zone and don't adjust their approach for 3 on 3.
Kadri is bad for his tunnel vision which can hurt a team in that situation, because he will make a bid when there's no support around him.
I think you need the skill but also the awareness to make a calculated risk but it's also about having a group with high confidence that when they pinch to make a play or drive the net, that they'll put it in the net.

The talent isn't there to compete with most teams; it is what it is.
Best option would be to play very conservative and hope you get a counter attack while not giving up odd man chances on your own net.
Like lower level teams in soccer do vs the bigger clubs, park the bus and hope for a counter.

It actually is. Minnesota risked a point in OT by pulling Fleury almost exactly a year ago.

Hynes explained to the press that the team's playoff hopes depended on getting two points. If they only got one point, it was just about as bad as getting nothing, so he maximized the team's chances of getting the win (and they did).

Like I said, go big or go home. Make the playoffs or pick top 10. Full catastrophe living.

Huska seems to be adjusting the playstyle in 3on3. Maybe study the tapes that made Hartley's tenure so effective (wasn't just about the players, though that helped quite a lot too - though perhaps these are useless as teams have evolved since 3 on 3 was instituted). I liked what the Flames were trying to do, and I hope that they continue to do so.
One gripe of mine is Zary's usage. I wish that he was the 4th line C instead of a 4th line winger for however long he is readjusting. He is probably the Flames most dynamic player, and I think that's what is really missing in OT as well - more dyanmic players. I like Pospisil out there too as he is a very underrated passer, and he is the fastest skater and can knock guys off pucks too.
I would say that Huska seems to be trying new things and that I hope the Flames continue with it regardless of who is on the ice. The biggest improvements will come when more talented and dynamic players graduate.

Who is that someone?
Here is the face-off win percentage for our Cs:
Backlund 48.2%
Kadri 47.5%
Frost 48.5% (in 12 games with the Flames)
Rooney 47.4%
Sharangovich 49.6%
Zary 36.6%
Pospisil 41.0%

I wouldn't be against trying Zary at 4C along with Pospisil on that line. Run Klapka in the top 9 where he looks better and sit Rooney. Not going to happen, though.

Frost was above 50% in Philly.
Conroy said they work really hard at this as well.

Faceoffs are partly a team stat, too. You don't get above 50% by just winning draws cleanly. You need your wingers to help if there's a scramble on the draw.
Seems to me the wingers could be more active to help get those numbers up.

I agree personnel is a big part of it, especially when we don’t have a game breaker nor strong face offs centers, so we automatically give up possession.
With that said I think if you separate Kadri and huberdeau you likely get better results especially because both make some selfish decisions in OT taking long shifts and getting stuck out gassed. We’ve seen it a few times this year alone where one or both get stuck out and it ends in the back of our net.

OT is SO DAMN FRUSTRATING..
What the heck was the Weegar play at the beginning, dipsy doodle through 2D, lose the puck and instant 2 on 1 against?? Brutal.

They're terrible at supporting each other and cycling it with awareness of where each other are.
You don't have to dipsy doodle through any one to create a goal with that much open ice. You just used your linemates better and execute with speed.

During the brief period at the start of the season where the flames were einnning some overtime games, it was Coronato and Zary in overtime. Why not try that again?

He came down later and shot it wide initiating a canuck 2 on 1.
Weegar looked lost in OT tonight.

I believe the simplest answer is the correct answer, get better players? That's probably the simplest answer.
