I’d love if we were the reason the Canucks didn’t make the playoffs and someone on the flames waves bye-bye to Hronek after his taunting last year. That guy is a tool, can’t stand him.

This version of Huberdeau would be full value at 8 million, or Kadri's contract.
At 10.5.. yeah, it's not quite there. And I've liked his play a lot.
But it's no longer an albatross that you anguish over. He's brought a net positive contribution on many more nights than not this season.
Much better player than before, and he has a wicked shot too.

Anderson has that burst speed but not the IQ, easy example a few games ago in OT where he gassed himself and had us hemmed in for minutes.

A lot of it is a matter of perception. Certain guys look worse when they're running cold than others. But it's less a Sharangovich problem and more of a Flames offence problem.
|
Sharangovich must be the least intense guy on the team. I don’t think I have ever seen him hit anyone.

I'm shocked they are doing as well as they are this year. No elite offensive talent anywhere on this team (unless Huberdeau is playing as well as he can). Tough way to win.
|
They are 16th in expected goals against and 27th in expected goals for. The system is super passive when defending - clear priority to prevent east west passes instead of trying to pressure the puck and force a turnover. Just stay in position and wait for a mistake. In the offensive zone their fore check sucks They make zero effort to defend centre ice or their own blue line, inviting puck carriers into the zone instead of trying to stand them up and maybe getting beat. It's why we spend so much damn time defending in our own end.
Farabee and Frost were added to bring some offense, and Huska has done asolutley squat with them.
His system worked in Junior where you can wait for the other team to make mistakes and take advantage. In the NHL when you give the other team time and space they will make you pay.
Repeatedly trying to defend 1 goal leads in the third by collapsing back and playing the entire time in your own end is stupid and doesn't work.

Which is hilarious to read as during the time they were here I read all the same stuff you read about today's players about being useless, unclutch and needing to be switched out for better, stronger players if we want to become a contender.

Not during the 2-3 seasons when they were an almost guarantee win.
The last couple years it dipped and I imagine there was a lot of hand-wringing then, but 2016-2019ish they were rolling teams in OT. And nearly always controlled the bulk of possession.
It was still frustrating, but certainly easier to stomach in OTs then because we generated opportunities (with a lot of second and third chances).

Was thinking the exact same thing tonight. Those 4 have really carried the team this season.
Backlund has done some heavy lifting defensively too.

Yeah, with the cap exploding and Huberdeau playing like this he could easily be close to or worth that contract for at least the next few seasons until he starts regressing.

Man I remember Dougie Hamilton and Johnny and Mony in OT. And Hudler too.
Fun times.

I used to work with someone who told me her three least favourite Flames of all time (in no order) were Giordano, Brodie, and Hamilton. I didn't talk to her much after that.

I thought Hughes and Petterson took that game over in the third. We had no one step up to match that.
Another data point telling us that this team is not good enough to be a playoff team. And yet, here we are.
Wolf was amazing and I’m really happy about Huberdeau’s redemption. The Architect.

Retaliated to a Petterson hit on Kadri (clean open ice hit) and kind of threw his elbow at the back of Petterson's head. Didn't hurt him but it was a little dirty for sure.

Kadri and Huberdeau are not our problem.
Guys like Sharangovich, coleman, andersson and weegar’s drop offs, Zary post injury, Backlund are the bigger issue. Zero secondary scoring.
They’ll have to figure that out in the off season

Weegar's dropped off? That's news to me.
Coleman was actually really good tonight. Quieter season than I like from him on the whole though, I suppose.
Zary and Coronato need to get things back on track but they're also young and aren't too seasoned with this yet. Maybe it's about simplifying, but they need to win some battles out there and start generating plays to get it moving in the right direction again.
Sharangovich.. yeah, I don't know what to say. He's phoned it in. Completely different player from last year.

Goes to show how fans will turn on top performing players when they aren't elite 100% of the time. Iggy used to get torn apart here for being lazy.
How often have we heard fans claim a player gave up on the team? Kadri gets it a tonne and I'm not sure what quantifies that other than being a historically high risk / high reward player.
Backlund is another who's been called lazy despite being a player who has propped up his linemates for much of his career, as the top shutdown forward, often playing through injuries. Monahan got dragged through the mud despite often playing through multiple injuries as well.
And if you're a defenceman that plays a lot of tough minutes? Better not make many mistakes or you'll get eaten alive by the fans.

He’s on pace for 62 points with getting the premium ice time and PP time.
You don’t pay $10.5MM for that.
He is simply the best of a very sorry group of offensive players.
