F-150 makes sense. It's the best vehicle when you need something to haul/tow. Sooooo many people need trucks (in spite of people pretending they don't).
Yep I drove my father in law's 2021 RAV4 for two months and was totally underwhelmed. Dimestore interior and one of the least fefined 4-cylinder engines I can remember going back to the 90's. The fact this vehicle is an annual top 5 seller just goes to show how little people actually care about driving dynamics and quality.
We’ve had our RAV4 for many years and it’s great. It’s a f'ng Toyota. That’s all we’ve had for decades.

Yes exactly. You don't really know any better when you have only owned one brand. Just imagine how great it would feel to drive a really nice vehicle and you don't have to spend more. Just go to a Honda or Mazda dealership.

Also don't get me started on the Corolla. I believe it's the top selling car in Canada? The interior is an embarrassment for a car built ten years ago, let alone today. I laugh when I see a GR Corolla on the streets knowing someone paid $60k for a car that would be $35-40k if Hyundai made it from the exact same parts.
If white goods included cars, Toyota products are the finest example. People might get excited about getting a new washing machine, but you don't get excited about actually having to use it for the reason you bought it. It's just an appliance. Wash the bed sheets, do a load of dishes. No one enjoys loading and unloading the dishwasher, they just prefer it to taking public trans-... I mean, doing dishes by hand.
There are brands that build vehicles for people who don't know anything about cars and don't care to; Toyota is chief amongst those brands.

I think car people often miss that for most people, a car is an appliance, and that's all they ever want it to be(which is, to be clear, totally fine). Is it safe, efficient, reliable, and easy to use? A Rav4 tics those boxes. A lot of enthusiast vehicles don't.

Imagining what the most opposite of all those things would be? A Dodge Viper?

Polaris Slingshot. Though it does have a Honda engine, so might still be efficient given it's weight. And even reliable as long as it never rains or snows. Hrmmm...

Cars and brands like Toyota and Honda are very vanilla in a whole host of everything they do. Engineering, styling, interior design and more. When it comes to long term ownership of them, they are great cars. Very very reliable (although not as much as before) built very well, have amazing resale value and more. They just do exactly what they are suppose to do and are designed very well.
The old Toyota's and Honda's were very boring but borderline indestructible. I see friends of mine who literally spend thousands and thousands of dollars almost quarterly for newer model cars that have issues. Where is this excess cash coming from?
I will say that some of the models these days are kinda resting on their past and pricing for all cars including Toyota's and Honda is beyond stupid.
Vanilla is the most popular flavor in the world and blows everything else out of the water.

So many people need to rent a truck once a year, but instead choose to commute in it by themselves every day.

Yeaaaaah, no, most people who have trucks don't need them in spite of the horrible lies they tell themselves that make the baby Jesus cry to justify the purchase. You might find the occasion where it's more convenient, but if you're spending most of the time in it driving yourself to and from the office and the grocery store, you are fooling no one... least of whom, yourself. It's just the stereotypical Alberta commuter car.
They want them, and that's fine; just admit that it's a want, not a 'need'. Hell, I don't even need an SUV either; I have no kids, haven't gotten another dog (yet), and the cat and his crate and fit in the sports car just fine. But I wanted one.

Yeah, especially the Extended Cabs with a 4-foot box. I could probably fit more stuff in the back of my Volkswagen.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Having the option to buy things because you want them, not just because you need them, is one of the best part of living in a capitalist society. That whole "each according to need" BS is what leads to everyone driving a Trabant.
Of course. And to be clear, I reserve my ire specifically for people using half-ton and bigger trucks like commuters and claim it's out of need. On the other hand; Tacomas, Ford Mavericks and Rangers, whatever, fill your boots, they've mostly got little four-bangers and EcoBoost sixes in them anyway.
