Weird offseason for the Steelers. I would hate the Metcalf trade and contract if I was a fan and they aren't going anywhere with Fields, Wilson, or Rodgers. They should just start rebuilding at this point rather than delaying the inevitable.

Darnold is just far too risky to commit long terms and big money too, as far as making a big impact so that Seattle can win more than 1 playoff game (or less) per year, a streak that's been going a decade.
Drafting a top QB would be a better (and risky) idea along with Howell.

The thinking seems to be that Darnold would be gettable for a contract similar in structure to what Baker got a few years ago. 3 years and a bit less than what Geno is getting paid - which, maybe that happens, maybe it doesn't. If it does then you've at least gotten a bit younger. I don't really think you're better. But it does seem like MM wants to revamp the offense to be more run-oriented, which, what else is new.
I'm sure they'll draft a QB as well, somewhere in this draft. There's just no realistic way they can get to the basement of the league, IMO. The defense figured it out last year post-Ernest Jones IV and they are bringing back all 11 starters on that side for continuity as they go into year two of implementing the MM defense. Even if they're really bad on offense they'll still find 5 or 6 games to win.

Find a new team to cheer for, at least. Steelers are gonna need new owners before they ever consider tanking, their pride always gets in the way of what needs to be done. That said, Rodgers is still better than Russ or Fields so if you're trapped in purgatory maybe a little bit of Satan will get you out?

Yeah Steelers are similar to the Flames in the sense they refuse to do a full rebuild. They just seem content to be good enough to challenge for a division title, grab a wild card spot, maybe win a playoff game, and that's it.

I dunno, Steelers have had 3 coaches since what 1970? The Flames under Treliving went through 3 coaches in a year and half.

Yes a much more successful version, since the 90s anyway. But starting in the 2010s they seem to have fallen from perennial Super Bowl contender to perennial playoff contender, its not what it once was. And i don't think ownership is on board with a full rebuild.

Going back to the Jets reject well. Honestly not a horrible contract, if he plays like the first 16 games last year it's a good deal, and if he plays like the last two it's an easy contract to get out of.

Darnold to Seattle. Now I just need Fields to the Jets and I can take the year off.

I mean, I get it from Fields' perspective. He was benched at 4-2 and never got another look because the ####ty veteran got a much longer leash. I wouldn't trust Tomlin to give me another fair shot either. And to the Jets' credit, they've built a solid coaching staff. Nice contract too. But it tells you everything about the Steelers when players leave you for the Jets.
Oh well. At least I can now just watch Redzone every Sunday instead and watch more of the rest of the league.

Hard to say if 27 year old Darnold at $33M per season is better or worse than 34 year old Geno at $45M but I think it's probably a bet I would make in Schneider's position as well.
EDIT: Wait, what is the deal? NFL.com says 3 years 100.5M, ESPN says 110.5M.
EDITEDIT: Apparently I was right the first time, it is 3 years 100.5M with 55M guaranteed, which means my earlier comparison to the Baker contract makes me Nostradamus. If anyone else would like anything predicted future-wise let me know.

My Seattle season ticket holding friends are not loving that Darnold move at all. They hate it. No way he commands that much money. He was terrible in the last 4 or 5 weeks no showing in critical games.

This just... isn't true? The weeks 12-16 of the regular season he was 14TD 2INT, 69% completion rate (nice), 287 ypg and 8.1 ypa, he was good. He basically sucked for the last two games. Now, it's certainly fair to say those were the "prove it" games and the most important of the season and it's reasonable to have doubts based on those, but to say he was terrible the last "4-5 weeks" just isn't reality-based.
Rich Eisen went on the air this morning and predicted that this deal would be 50 million per season, and it's 55M guaranteed total. If it doesn't work out this year they're not tied to anything, and they're not contenders this year anyway unless something very strange happens, so it seems like it's worth a shot.

He won't be throwing to JJ or Addisson. The question is who will he be throwing to.

for what it's worth, I'd have had no issue at all giving Darnold or Fields the contracts that they got. But that might be the fear of A A Ron in me talking.

JSN, for sure. They have some guys who can play WR3 / WR4 roles. But they absolutely need a solid second option as Lockett isn't going to be back. I'm not sure how they feel about the tight end room with Barner, Brown and Fant - seems "just OK" to me. They're almost certainly drafting a WR but that likely isn't a solution for this year.
