The fact that he had minority governments where he had to bend to NDP requests for most of the last 6 years probably did make the past few years more idealistic and less economically robust.
But between a Trump term, the Pandemic and what's looking like a potential collapse of the 80 year old post WW2 order it's more than most of his predecessors ever had to deal with.
I was not a fan of him calling the snap election in 2021 which resulted in what was the same thing a minority government. But in hindsight, it's probably going to prove to be a pretty savvy strategy as the anti-incumbent sentiment from the Pandemic had not fully settled in, and it bought the Liberals more time in power even if it was status quo. Now that we get to observe some of the other far right shifts in other locales...Canadians get to see what it looks like in action, and a lot probably are thinking I don't want this in my country. So that extra time will likely let the Liberals with a new Leader do a lot better in this election than if they had held on in 2023. The bought enough time to wait out the crazy.

I'm relatively younger on the forum and only really remember the Harper and Trudeau years. Has a party ever successfully been re-elected after the leader has stepped aside?

Paul Martin would be the most recent. It did see the Liberals go from a Majority to a Minority.
Trudeau the Elder did it when Pearson stepped aside. And Louis St-Laurent did it when King stepped aside with majority governments.

It is more important than ever to stay true to our principles despite the events in the US. I hear a lot of rhetoric right now about how we need to come up with a Canadian strategy to diversify our markets and consolidate our energy production in a way that benefits Canada first, and I agree wholeheartedly, but if we achieve that by foregoing indigenous rights or ignoring climate change realities, are we any different than the regime south of the border?
|
I don't think anyone is proposing the bolded. It is worth noting that Canada’s upstream oil and natural gas industry has a long history of interaction with Indigenous peoples and the industry has made great strides toward learning, developing relationships, and sharing benefits from resource development. I believe something like 8% of the workforce is FN people.
As for fighting Climate Change, the oil and natural gas industry has been doing much to reduce emissions and is engaged in various initiatives to reduce CO2.
Thanks to the Liberal Government, we have wasted 9 years, and have foregone a fortune in lost LNG sales, while we sat here and watched the US become the largest exporter of LNG on the planet. The Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin is primarily a gas basin, and we have the ability to sell our gas to places like China, so they can replace their coal with gas to reduce CO2. Not only would we be fighting climate change, but we would be making money to support our healthcare system, strengthen our defense system, and survive the tariff war.
With Carney's background re Climate Change, and his close relationship with Trudeau over the years, I don't see him being the person to take advantage of our resources.

Is Carney the first PM with a Hockey DB page? https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/....php?pid=23267
Reading his Wikipedia page, he was apparently roommates with Peter Chiarelli at Harvard.

Carbon tax is gone. His government is eliminating it immediately so I'm assuming that is happening next week.
