If he doesn't extend in TO - hawks will do a massive contract for him I think.

The first part someone posted that Dreger reported he isn't interested in any Canadian teams outside of Toronto.
Second part was just a joke. Lighten up.

I've honestly never thought Toronto is the place for Marner. He doesn't like criticism. A lot of it was well deserved in the playoffs, as he's yet to make himself a difference maker when it really matters. I think he likes it because it's his hometown and he likes playing with Matthews, but ultimately it's not a place for his personality. If they offer him a boatload of money I'm sure there's a possibility, but I don't think the team will offer more than Matthews.
So that ultimately means he's in it this year for one good push, but he's gone when they don't offer that big contract to him.

Sounds like he was giving Marner the option to lock up long term, as they would prefer to keep him over Rantanen.
Otherwise they would try and trade for a signed Rantanen. The players are fairly comparable in impact,I would rather have the signed one.
Guys like Marner come off so entitled to me. He already is going to have well over 100 million in contract money by the end of his career.
He hasnt won ####. If you love your home town team sooooo much then stop dragging them around and sign a reasonable contract. I'm sure he could walk in and ask for the rantanen deal and it would be signed in an hour.

I reported about a month ago that Marner's agent has told the Leafs he will explore free agency. There is bad blood there between Marner and the Leafs from the last contract negotiations and Marner is tired of being the whipping boy there with fans and media.

If that’s true why would he block a trade then? Seems odd to block a trade if he wants out.

Not really. It's a last shot to win with the home team. Maybe he thinks the Leafs have a better shot at the Cup. Lots of players don't want to deal with the hassle of moving in season too if they can help it. Maybe he doesn't want to help the Leafs get a return because he is pissed off. There could be many reasons.

They said on TSN he told them he wasn’t negotiating and wanted to play the season out in Toronto. Nothing about him wanting out. He’s kept his intentions close to himself and that is what might be frustrating the Leafs. So he was caught off guard with the ask of waiving.
Hilarious tho. Would love it if he stuck it to Brad and the Leafs but I suspect he won’t.
Just hope Conroy stays out of the free agent game.

I don’t really understand this marner guy. Reports are he was offended that Toronto asked if he would be interested in going to Carolina for rants. He won’t negotiate with Toronto, wants to test free agency , yet is offended that they would think about trading him for somone that might sign with leafs. I 100% understand blocking trade but to be offended is ridiculous

Why block a trade?
I think it’s simple, he didn’t want to play in Carolina, his friends are all on Toronto and they both have a shot at the cup this year.
Maybe a condition of the trade was he had to sign long term there, we don’t know.
But he likely would rather have his choice on the open market and so he decided to use his blocking privileges to do so.
I doubt he’s back, especially after Brad tried to move him.

What's the feeling is it wrong for the Flames to try and sign him?

My personal opinion retool rebuild or contending is free agency should be used to fill some holes not try to go after the big fish.
A couple pages back you had a gm just say the biggest mistakes are made on Trade deadline and July 1st.
Nashville is a great example. They won July 1st but they aren’t winning hockey games.

Giving 35 year old Stammer term is far different than prime Marner.
Guy is amazing offensively and defensively, he is one of the few that is actually under rated in TO. If he leaves they will miss him big time

A seven year deal would take him from 28-35. Not exactly terrible.
Only Trouble is you already having aging and expensive Huberdeau and Kadri.

That’s the thing and he’s a winger. How many wingers does this team need. I get that he’s a legit 1st line winger but so was Huberdeau.
Even the talk about Rantanen another winger. Why chase him? He’s even older than Marner.
That could be 3 contracts you are stuck with.
They are better looking to find a reverse Hamilton deal.

I'd rather have Marner than Kadri or Huberdeau. And Marner can play center it's just the Leafs are pretty deep at C. Marners a plug and play player in the Flames system, they don't have to tear him down and rebuild him like they did with Huberdeau.
Honestly, if the Flames can land Marner I fully believe they will.

Like, I'm envisioning a Farabee-Frost-Marner line and think that's a perfectly suitable line in the top 6 FW group.

I know he is playing better but that Huberdeau contract really is awful.
Our best hope is that the CBA renewal in 2026/27 gives us an option to annul a contact.
The though of 6 more years of 10.5M after this season really in depressing.

Huberdeau game didn’t need to be broken and rebuilt. Darryl Sutter destroyed him. He was doing all things in Florida he came to Calgary and was used like he was a bum.
If you go back to his interviews when he came here he talked about how playing penalty kill and getting ice time really helped his game. So Darryl decided to play him 14 minutes a game.
And no Marner isn’t playing wing because Toronto is deep at C. He always was a winger.
