That was an excellent, intelligent, and thoughtful response from Trudeau there. He didn't take the bait from that reporter, who was clearly fishing for some kind of viral sound bite that he could feed to the American networks in order to escalate tensions. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a Fox News reporter.
And I love that he made it crystal clear that the American people are our brothers/sisters/neighbours, and that our collective anger is directed solely at the U.S. government.
I haven't been a big fan of Trudeau over the last several years, but I gotta hand it to him. The guy has been outstanding during these last few weeks and has done a great job steering us through the insanity.
My anger is directed at the 2/3rds of Americans that either directly supported or indirectly allowed Trump to get elected for a 2nd time. They are not our friends, and the loudest among them have switched to straight enemies who are actively campaigning for our demise. So no, this isn't just a protest against the current American government, trust in America as a whole and their people has been broken to a point that it will probably never recover

Agreed. American either by their action (in voting for him) or inaction (in not voting) allowed this gong show to happen, despite knowing exactly who this man was.

Great piece by Andrew Chang on CBC yesterday trying to make sense of Trump's constant flip-flopping on tariffs and how it's starting to appear more and more likely that he's using the constant threat of tariffs and the uncertainty and chaos it causes to basically force American companies to move all of their manufacturing back to the U.S. And that he'll just keep threatening and then pulling back over and over again until companies eventually give in and change their entire business strategies.
Trump seems to think that this stuff can just happen overnight (or in 30 days), because he's a complete dumbass. When in reality it would take years to make those kinds of changes. They had a guy on from the American side who works in the auto sector (from Michigan I think), and he mentioned that just to build new plants would take at least 4-5 years and billions of dollars, and that it would take possibly a decade to completely change the supply lines.
For the U.S. oil sector, it would probably take even longer to make those kinds of changes.

Maybe we can pay those companies to announce they are making changes like that, promising to invest billions. He will take the win and then not follow through.

Bingo. Just another layer to the stupidity.
None of this is a finger snap away from happening.
Trump's "little disturbance" will last a very long time before those industries see any form of normalcy while operating solely within the US.
There is such a warped perception around the timeline and complexity that such changes would entail.

The thing that's most idiotic about that is if he actually framed it that way, a lot of people would be on board. Like if Trump came out tomorrow and said "American business, bringing your jobs back to USA by 2026 or we tariff everything."
You'd probably have pretty broad support for that idea and it would give all economies surrounding and attached time to coordinate adjustments. But he's an idiot. So that's not what he's doing.

Trump has been in public life now for more than 9 years and people are still trying to find rational reasons for his impulsive ideas. Absolutely nuts. Crazy stuff

Because it's more comforting to think there's an actual plan instead of remembering that he's an emotionally immature, mentally declining, psychotic individual who is just making it up as he goes.

That's exactly SCD is saying. It's discomforting to know the truth, so people try and come up with reasons for Trumps's behavior to make themselves feel better.

I think the plan is genuinely to take Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal and we have to be concerned. He doesn't want to play by UN rules he wants to play Age of Empires.

Sanewashing is a good term lol. But yeah if you think all of Trump's insanity is actually part of a grander plan then it's easier to sleep at night cause there's a perception it's under control with a clearly defined endgame. Thinking some psychotic late 70s nut case is just in a perpetual dementia episode is pretty unsettling, even if it's obviously true.
