I suspect Kane will be downright useless anyway.
It would have been funny for them to have waive someone to activate him though.
The league needs to fix this. You just know the minute the Flames are in a position to exploit this, the NHL will decide to change it. Wasn't Kane just saying recently that he was almost ready?

The Kane - LTIR until playoffs maneuver is not surprising, but it could backfire.
He isn't a 27 year old Kucherov (that Tampa withheld for LTIR on their way to the 2021 cup)
Kane was a liability last playoffs and I think he'll been even worse this year. If I was Edmonton, I'd want him getting late season games in to get up to speed. Expecting a 33 year old power forward who had surgery for two torn hip adductor muscles, two hernias, two torn lower abdominal muscles and one knee to be effective in playoffs day 1 is insane.
I actually like Walman a player, but by trading next years 1st + the condition for the following year, the Oilers have lost one of their major assets they could trade for goaltending help.
They are going to burn the last of the wonder twins cheap/most productive years with Skinner.

Kane was bad before and will be worse this time around.
Not even mad when the player possibly makes them worse lol.

There is no value in keeping him on LTIR for the remainder of the year - they can't add anyone else anyway

It’s not about value, it’s about that they have to or they’d be way over the cap.

Yeah, Kane sucks. It's not really that anyone should be concerned about him bolstering the team. It's that it protects the Oilers from having to waive someone to make room for him.

Edmonton has always done it. Mike Smith and Duncan Keith for example.
The amount of whining Oiler fans have done about this the past couple years is embarrassing. All the while pretending that Mike Smith and Duncan Keith didn't exist.
The fact that they were talking about trading Kane says that he's likely ready to play. The league needs to stop this, they waited on the surgery, and now they are keeping him out.

Lol doesn't matter now but I'm still trying to figure out how Mike Smith finishes the playoffs, doesn't leave or get stretchered out, but wallah, suddenly he can't play hockey any more and failed his fitness testing that he supposedly showed up for.
Duncan Keith opts out of playing his final year as well after it looked like things are business as usual and magically winds up with a cushy role in hockey ops around the same time.
Kane waits several months to get a surgery he knows he needs as a high profile part of a team trying to compete for a championship. No one bothers to ask why he's less than hurried to get it done in time to get back in during the season, despite having forever to do it.
Just so convenient in all three cases.
Although I can see Smith getting fed up and quitting hockey and leaving the oilers with no choice but to find a lame excuse. So maybe that case wasn't entirely the oilers being shady.

LTIR is such a sham. The NHL is almost CFL level at this point.

They have really stopped trying to hide it at this point. Once you're on LTIR, the team has full discretion as to when you come off it and has nothing to do with health.
It's just a taxi squad.

Other teams are better but its a crime that they will get a bye in the first round when they inevitably play LA again, meanwhile powerhouse teams will be destroying/injuring each other in the first round. So annoying.
