If they can't offer sheet they should make a big pitch for him via trade (or sign and trade). The Stars will be in tough to offer him a big contract. They have Rantanen, Seguin, Hintz, Heiskenan, Oettinger on big contracts and Robertson and Harley both will be a year away from his next one. I know the cap is going up a lot but still...

They reportedly made him a huge contract offer and he was non-committal about it.
Think they were expecting him to be more gung ho about wanting to sign in Carolina, when he wasn't they were afraid he was going to be just a rental for the price they paid.

Wouldnt that offer sheet be with the 2026 pick? since it would be after the draft no?

Any offer sheets given this summer would include draft picks from 2026 and beyond. The only first round pick the Flames have potentially moved is 2025's.

Dunno why but Stankoven got a lot of attention on this site (and Johnston was not mentioned at all).
Some on CP love small centres.

He was good when he was up last year and the playoffs, and started hot this year, but he's done little since.

Part of that was because he was picked right after we took Stromgren and it felt like the makings of another Point situation

They don't have to fit him under the cap - they are easily in a playoff spot, they have two elite level players on LTIR who will be back for the playoffs, players who will have a big pay raise next year (Ottinger, Bourque, Johnston) and a bunch of expiring contracts including players who will have a pay raise (Duchane in particular).
Easily the best drafting team in the NHL in the past decade.

The dudes on Sirius NHL channel say that Canes are shopping one of the 1sts for more..

Thanks, I guess since an offer sheet would be after the season they would know if 2025 slides to 2026.
What would $7MMx5 be on an offer sheet? 1st. 2nd & 3rd? I'd do that for him but we would have to have a decision on backlund.
Johnston
Kadri
Frost
Backlund (or entry level prospect)

Does Dallas become the SC favourite now?

I'd rather have Necas and Drury if the idea was to compete in the playoffs

Dallas has already offered Johnston 8x8.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stankoven gets to Carolina and replaces Necas production, he's going to fit that team like a glove.
In the end they salvaged what was a tough situation with Rantanen after they took a big swing and missed and now they got a lot of capital to go do something else.

Dallas is loaded for this year, but if they sign Johnston to $8MM a year, that paints a clear picture they won't be able to bring back Benn and Duchene next year if it wasn't clear already. Likely the right call, but could be difficult for room chemistry for the remainder of this year. Or not. They may have known this year was their last with Dallas and want to go out with a bang. Interesting at any rate.

Rantanen couldn't replace Necas' production. I don't think Stankoven is going to
