With Rantanen signing in Dallas, I wonder if that changes anything for Conroy this morning in terms of what trades he will make?

Offseason - cap goes up - be a good time to do trades as well.

I'm saying I don't love the path they're taking, because to me they've been taking steps to churn over the roster while trying to stay in the middle lane. Clearly you don't understand that view I guess.

Wolf is really great though and it's nice we have 4 1sts over the next two years, even if they're bottom half 1sts.

I think there’s a lot of people on this board that should start cheering for Buffalo, Chicago and San Jose, lots of shiny new toys and high draft picks. Scorched earth tank ain’t happening here, management has been pretty honest with everyone, Conroy reiterated today, said 3-5 years is his timeline which I love to here, there’s no deviation from their plan, we just overachieved a bit this year and the Montreal 1st is history, no sense worrying about that, that’s a legacy deal and one that I don’t believe Conroy does.

I feel very disappointed. We sold last year when prices were low, because that’s when we had all the UFAs. And we’re not selling our most marketable asset of Andersson this year when prices are very high, because we’re fighting for the playoffs. If we now go on to trade futures for depth, miss the playoffs or get destroyed in the first round and not finish top-10, and then sign Andersson to play until age 37, this season will be the quintessential Flames’ season.

What I don't understand is how selling Kadri and Anderson for very late 1st round pick is going to solve the problem.

Unless they think that Andersson and Kadri are so good that they are keeping this team afloat, while somehow at the same time not being good enough to help the team win. IDK. The Flames pick will not be top ten unless wolf gets hurt, benched or traded.
I think selling Kadri is not even a realistic consideration.

The Andersson thing I think is driven by a lot of posters' fear that not trading him now inevitably means the Flames are extending him. Which isn't true or even consistent with what Conroy has done.

I just think Conroy knows what he wants to get for any particular player and doesn't take a lesser deal unless his hand is really forced.

That's the point. The Flames are always settling for OK when they could try and make tougher, and sometimes riskier, plays to get into good-great status.

But no, the franchise and ownership are very comfortable being OK at all times.

What steps have they made to try to stay in the middle?

Yup, after that one I am way more relaxed if Andersson doesn't get traded right now and I was never expecting Kadri to move given his contract. Kadri is an offseason trade if it happens. I think the only trade today that people can be bummed about is if they would have swapped Zary for Cozens. I wouldn't have so I don't care.

I mean it's a speculation forum.

The whole point is to speculate and no one can predict the future.

Conroy could make some amazing moves still. Maybe they happen in the offseason.

I think it's still fine to talk what-ifs.

What more would you like them to do?

I was being sarcastic, the Markstom.deal was great. Bahl and a 1st that is looking better by the day.

Ugh I can't decide if I want to be livid at the lack of deadline deals made by the flames so far or if I want to ride my moral high horse and admonish fans who disagree while telling them to cheer for someone else if they don't like it. Why can't everything be a simple binary choice?

Markstrom trade was a good trade, not just OK.

We got a young top pair D and a pick for a goalie we were almost all desperate to get rid of.

Given that the Flames have done a good job Identifying Bhal and to a lesser degree Sharangovich I agree with you on the bolded.

Conroy doesn't want just any player in return, he wants to bring in sure things.

Sharangovich, Miromanov, Bahl, Kuzmenko, Mantha Frost and Farabee are all moves to keep us afloat and try and to see if they could speed up a retool.

Mid 20s guys, maybe underutilized with some upside.

I'm not saying they're bad deals. Some were good value. I don't agree with the overarching strategy though. But I think they intentionally target early to mid 20s guys. They've publicly said as much.
