But at least that reflects the season standings

So Dallas expected him to take less money on a shorter term contract? Why would Rantanen even consider that. Max money for less years makes sense, otherwise he may as well head back to Colorado in the Summer.

I think the 12m they offered is equivalent to 13.5-14 in heavier taxed states. Probably just means Rantanen has a couple of places in mind and isn't budging for other places.

to be fair $12M in Texas is a lot more money in your pocket than $12M elsewhere.

I have no idea if where I saw that was actually credible other than the guy who said it usually isn't making stuff up.
So grain of salt required, same as a lot of rumblings today

With all this upheaval around Rantanen it's kind of unsurprising that he's been out of sorts on the ice.

It sounds more and more like Rantanen is chasing the $ this summer. If that's the case, then Flames might actually have a chance to sign him.
Flames are in a dilemma with Wolf getting too good too quickly. They finally get their potential franchise goalie in his prime, but that means they won't ever bottom out, but they won't be good enough to be contenders until they wait for prospects to pan out. But if you continue to trade away players for picks to be less competitive, how will that impact Wolf? Last thing we need is for him to turn into Gibson because the rest of the team sucks so much.
Do they start supplementing their core with UFAs to try to compete then?

Well prepare for Rantanen to Toronto rumors all summer.
McKenzie on TSN said that it is unlikely that Toronto will trade for Rantanen because they won't include Knies in the package.
Said that Rantanen would look favorably at signing in Toronto or Florida.

Hearing if they can't get something done on Rantanen they may pivot to looking at a Marchand rental.

If marner walks out the door for nothing, it does make sense for Toronto to go after rantanen as a ufa. Rantanen with Mathew’s would be pretty good

Or they will keep that money earmarked for someone hitting free agency the next year.

If you trade for Rantanen, give your group the chance to go to war in the playoffs with him.
Don’t make a futures based deal six weeks after going all in.

IMO Rantanen is playing a bit of a dangerous game. His performance since leaving Colorado has been pretty subpar. If he doesn't improve before he hits UFA status, a lot of teams are going to think twice about throwing that huge contract at him.
