After a year of telling them to work hard and push, I don’t want my gm going into the room of a playoff team and telling them nah they won’t win so he’s pulling the plug.
And what about other years when the team is making the playoffs a bit more comfortably but isn’t really a ‘contender’… do you still want Craig to sell valuable pieces because the team is very unlikely to win the cup?
That’s not how you get groups of people to work towards and outcome.

The message being we think we have depth at center (Frost/Backlund/Zary) to overcome this move. We want to develop Zary as a center going forward and we thought we got a great return for Kadri. Zary will now get more minutes against harder competition and more P\power play time to continue to develop at his natural position.
This also gives the team cap flexibility going into an offseason with numerous top players in the league being available. Marner/Rantanen/Ehlers etc. If Zary faulters then that lets us know he is a winger and the Dylan Cozens type trade makes even more sense.
Please dont forget that Kadri is a streaky player, and I question his effort and someone I want to be a leader on this team. It wasn't that long ago who disappeared for half a season after getting hit by Trouba in New York.

Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise. If they did end up just missing out but then moved into the top 5 with near zero lottery chances

Yes please let this serve as a response to all who are fast to point this out, you're hanging your hats on what today is a 1.1% chance that the flames pick will advance to 6th overall.
There's probably a higher chance that the president orders a land invasion of Alberta by the end of the NHL season than this occurring.

The flames are going to be stuck AGAIN in the mushy middle. None of this Conroy has a plan hogwash will work anymore. The plan is to keep his job by appeasing ownership and slashing his way to at least one playoff game no matter what.

Would love to watch the alternate universe where you manage a group of people to achieve a task.
You’re sad I traded your best player absent a contract crunch for draft picks? You’re weak.
You’re sad I said I don’t think you can get into the playoffs or win the cup? You’re weak.
Now get out there and play your hearts out.

In the end if Kadri truly isn't willing to go to Colorado as both Royle9 and Dissentowner have indicated since last night then it doesn't matter.
It still sucks the Flames weren't able to capitalize on what appeared to be a very aggressive Colorado team (I'm shocked they moved Ritchie alone for a rental, let alone with a 1st added as well) but in the end if Kadri has said "I won't waive" then nothing they could do anyways.
I find it weird he wouldn't waive to go back to a place he wanted to stay but if wants to stay in Canada for non-hockey reasons then I get that too.
I still don't like the reports that Conroy isn't even engaging on talks for some players though, need to listen and be willing to negotiate on anyone in the position the Flames are in.

It happens in this universe, but there's a profound difference in managing regular employees to managing a troop of millionaires with oversized egos. One would think that a PhD might understand this, but it's possible that you're just a lonely university professor or something I guess.
Look, I can randomly attack your private life too!

Calling Kadri streaky while also hinting at a future where you trade for a Cozens is a take.
If kadri is streaky, cozens is…?
Kadri is streaky but the low ebb of his play is still above the Cozens that we have largely seen in the NHL.

Colorado is not going after Kadri anymore.
That's dead, Calgary did not want to move him.
They've since gone out and went to plan B.

I wonder how Squirrely Trelving is gonna get today. At some point he's going to shed his bridesmaid uniform and go nuts.

You must be real fun at parties. It is what it is we get that, I think we all thought we’d suck and be picking top 5-10 again but it turns out we cleaned out the locker room, added some picks and prospects, injected some youth at a low payroll and we overachieved. I’m ok with this and if you are a fan of hockey you should be too, we likely regress over the next few years our pain isn’t over. This draft doesn’t seem overly deep so who wants another pick in the 25-30 range? Who cares if we spend a 4th or 6th to get a depth d-man? Maybe we get a younger center for a later pick, we need that, backlund will retire and we can use a guy that maybe ends up as a middle 6 center. Conroy has said he’s looking for youth with term and didn’t chase too many high cost UFAs last summer with term. The dramatic stuff isn’t coming from management it’s coming from posters on this board. Let’s not believe everything we hear, actions count, let’s judge what happens and look at what has happened.
This is different and refreshing, patience and don’t be so angry with some short term success.

Haha no one attacked your private life. Unless you really do live in a hypothetical alternate universe.
And come on, don’t be so weak! Didn’t you want our players to be all tough? Lead by example.

Sure, I'd tell the team that the recent stretch of losses against the top teams convinced management that we currently can't compete with the top teams in the league in a 7 game series. That's why we need to take a step back in order to take several steps forward next year.
We wanted to create the opportunity for both Zary and Frost to solidify themselves as top 6 Cs and the future core of the team. Moreover, the assets gained from the Kadri trade, as well as the cap space will be used to bring in significant help in the offseason.
Finally, we couldn't be prouder in the way you(the players) battled for eachother all year, and we will be right on track to challenge for a division spot with a couple of additions in the offseason.
