That’s actually a good point on Carolina’s side. Since Raantenen is already half retained, they can sell him half retained again at a 2.3M cap hit, which is a bananas good deal for any team all-in this year.

The issue is trading for him only makes sense if you’re planning on signing him and having an open window for many years to come.

The West is absolutely stacked this year? Seems like a good year to not want to try the "sneak in and see how far we get" approach.

Agreed. No more Oilers/Kings please. Leafs/Lightning shouldn't be a 1st round matchup either.

But any year is a good year to give a young set of players a taste of the intensity of a 20+ game post trade deadline push and hopefully a playoff experience. Until you experience that as a player you can't pretend to know how you'll handle it and learn from it as your career progresses.

Ask Sam Bennett.

Its not like the Flames are going balls out to sneak in anyway...they have no significant pending UFAs, they aren't trading for rentals

this isn't the story some are making up in their heads

I don't disagree with your point but I don't understand how Sam Bennett is the example here.

Bennett got lots of playoff experience and played well in the playoffs as a Flame but it didn't help him in becoming a more impactful player overall for the Flames.

They can put Heiskanen on LTIR.

I just wonder if Carolina would want more of a roster piece back than futures, and was also wondering if Dallas would want to clear some cap off next years hit to make room for the extension too.

I don't think Dallas would be done if they get Rantanen either, they still need to upgrade their RH dmen.

Why, because they tried something and it didn't work out? Not serious lol

I'm assuming they are going to demand at least one of the Stars top young players/prospects as with their window open they need players not draft picks. If they indeed move him it's a pretty bad miscalculation for that organization.

I just don’t see a fit unless stars are giving them Wyatt or Robertson . Carolina gave up a haul for him. Maybe a signed rantanen for Wyatt ?

No chance its Wyatt, my guess if it occurs a 1st and prospect.

Hurricanes don't have much choice either trade him or they could likely lose him this summer

Reports I have seen is the trade is currently off, due to the contract negations? Is no one else seeing this?

Fans really need to petition the NHL to change the playoff format back to 1 vs 8. It is so stupid the way it is set up right now. Too many strong teams play off against each other in the opening round. How does it make sense that one of Colorado or Vegas will most likely be done in the first round while Edmonton or LA would be guaranteed a trip to the second round? Dumb!!!

Haven’t been able to read the whole thread but it sounds like if Rantanen signs the deal is done and Stankovin is part of the deal

Crosby has been calling for 1v8 forever and the league gives us 4 nations.

The Oilers should be starting on the road vs a stronger team but they will just get LA at home right now. Embarrassing
