Flames always screw this up. It's a sellers market. You're on the bubble. Sell these guys.
Did the same damn thing in 22-23. Market is going crazy and we're holding on to Hanifin, Lindholm, etc because of the chance of the playoffs and Becasue we might be able to re-sign them the next year. Then just end up moving them a year later for returns that probably would as good as you could have had that year:
It's not tanking or giving up on the season. It's just smart asset management .
|
Highly doubt they do better than the Lindholm trade
"Market" often also includes us over valuing Flames players

If the Flames trade anyone making more than Miromanov I'll change my avatar back to dickbutt for the rest of March

I would've taken that package. I mean is kadri your 1C of the future? No.
His value is its highest it'll be right now.
But the Flames want to ice a competent team while we build and not be playing players in spots where they'd be in over theor head/ability and I get that. Also leadership and mentoring is important.
Scorched earth is enticing from a future standpoint but it also is what creates a monster like Buffalo.

I mean, Kadri was always going to more difficult given his NMC.
I could see Connie having talked to Kadri and because he was told fairly clearly he wants to stay (as expressed multiple times), he never let talks get too crazy to both respect Kadri and to not get blue-balled himself.
I mean, could you imagine being offered Ritchie and a 1st and Kadri's like, nah man, told you I didn't want to go.
Now, the Avs and Leafs were always the speculated places he may waive for, but that's still a tough position to be in for Connie... how far to do you with another team, how many offers before you take one to Kadri, and not truly know if he'll agree or not.
He's also someone I think you could benefit from down the line, slotted correctly at 2C, maybe 3C in a few years.
Rasmus however... I really think the offers will only go down in the off-season and unlike Kadri, 8+ or heaven forbid 9+ is not something we can afford for ideally a 2nd pairing D, IMO.

We don't know if Kadri gets that package and we also don't know if Kadri wants to move. You are also almost certainly retaining for years too. Its apples and oranges.

Maybe not for Lindholm...but I do feel like had they shopped those guys (Toffoli, Hanifin, Lindholm) with the extra year with 50% retention they would have gotten a haul

No shot. Please.

I believe this was in fact what happened.
Maybe a team still offers a 1st for Kadri 2 years from now when we're not fighting for the playoffs?

If I found out that a first and Ritchie were offered for Kadri (and he was willing to waive), and Conny said no, I would be PISSED. So should everyone else.

Yup. The only acceptable answer to turning down a 1st + for Kadri would be "he said he wouldn't waive".
If it turns out a 1st and Ritchie were on the table and Kadri was willing to waive and the Flames didn't move him because they are battling for a playoff spot then that's a franchise altering mistake...no exaggeration.

I mean that's a late 1st so its not that egregious, but i would call it a miss for sure.

I'm liking the chances of a dickbutt avatar in your future.

That's a lot of pretty big ifs based on complete speculation, for a totally different player, and for conversations that never happened between the Flames and Colorado, so there is nothing there to be pissed about.
Nelson has lots of other suitors, so the price is elevated, while Kadri was supposedly interested only in Toronto or Colorado only, and not even Colorado it seems.

Kadri has 4 years left on his deal after this season, its far more complicated

I’m not remotely close to being on team tank but the Flames have a long history of over valuing their own players. It is what it is, the plan is to make the playoffs and revisit trading vets at a later date baring a huge overpay.
They also may not be very high on ritchie, who knows.
For months the rumours have been they arent trading vets

It's Ritchie that would be the get.
I like Kadri but he's 35 at the start of next season and he has 4 x $7M left. It's possible getting out of the last 2-3 years of that deal alone is a win.
A late first is just another lottery ticket.
But Ritchie is a 20 year old center who is 6'3" and has 67 points in 41 games this year. That changes the teams prospect pool entirely.

I don't think a 1st and Ritchie was specifically offered, but I am confident that Colorado wanted Kadri, I am confident that Conroy did not engage Colorado far enough in discussions where Ritchie was asked for, and I am fairly certain that had Conroy asked for Ritchie and a 1st, Colorado would have at least engaged and probably in the end agreed. We probably had to retain though, or take back a contract.
Kadri wants to stay in Calgary and Conroy respects that. He's also our #1C and helping us push for the playoffs.
Whether that's enough reason to not shop Kadri is up for debate.

Is there a team that is not cap strapped with a worse prospect base and less talented roster than the Calgary Flames
