They thought they could build a decent roster through the cap efficiency of the expansion draft, hit the ground running and build excitement in the new market. Which they kind of did.
But that cap efficiency evaporated fast, and with no elite players and few top picks, they have a pretty bad team. Now they’re going to have to build/rebuild properly through the draft. Two firsts and a second will help with that. But they’re going to get worse before they get better.

Yeah, you can still have a good team which they do and have draft picks. At some point they will hit a wall and it's coming soon, and they will need to replenish that roster.
I mean look at your roster it was built through the draft.

Seattle does well here - two 1sts and then some. Though I think Tampa overpaid here, they are definitely much stronger now too, and I have them in the top 2-4 favourites for winning a cup this year.

Heavy price but good players. My buddies here in Toronto are annoyed as there were rumours that Toronto was after Gourde too.

those are the words of a GM who not only knows he has a good team and needs to maximize their window, but only knows his team is a desirable UFA destination.
Completely disagree with the overall sentiment though. Many markets simply can't compete for marquee UFAs, so the draft is the only real way to build a contender. Even with the cap going up, draft picks are and will continue to be extremely valuable assets in this league. Tampa will find that out once their window closes and the cupboards are bare.

Gotta figure Tre has added pressure to make something happen.

Sam Mckee on the Kyper & Bourne show talked about how he and some of the other Leaf fans have grown frustrated with hearing about Treliving being in on every deal, going back to last year's deadline, but never being able to push the deal over the line.

Just because teams will pay a price of certain players does not mean they would for our players.
Just because Treliving was willing to pay a 1st and 2 2nds for Hamonic doesn;t mean others teams have.

not by him though. Since he took over in 2018, those are his picks that have played NHL games for the Lightning:
41 Gage Goncalves
26 Cole Koepke
18 Max Crozier
11 Gabriel Fortier
2 Dylan Duke
1 Hugo Alnefeldt, Jack Finley, Jack Thompson
They are a good team because Yzerman drafted well. Brisebois has handed out draft picks like candy.

No I get that, and he was the AGM at the time. It is just funny he makes that comment when the team he is providing help to was a drafted group.
Soon he will be a in a position selling his guys for picks. Will be interesting to hear what he has to say.

Well he said he would rather has a bunch of good players . I think all GMs would . The problem is if you don’t have the elite players to start with adding good players doesn’t help …..

Kucherov is 31
Hedman is 33
Point is 28
Guentzel is 29
Hagel is 26
Cirelli is 27
Vasilevskiy is 30
I think they're not even close to hitting a wall.

Hedman is 34, Guenzel is 30, and Point is 29 in a week.
Hagel, Cirelli, and Vasilevsky all have birthdays before next season.
I’d say, realistically, they’re looking at another 2-3 years tops before the wheels start falling off. That’s pretty close imo.

I'd like to see what Frost can do here after given more time to adjust.
I agree with the the sentiment of trading some of the older guys though.
Hope Frost, Coronato, Zary, Bahl and Wolf become the vets on this team as we bring in more youth in the coming seasons.

They may not hit a wall, but a slow decline is highly probable for all those players. That's enough to make the difference between a Cup contender and a run-of-the-mill playoff team.
